Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

OLE object causing problems on Form

I wanted to put some fancy backgrounds on my forms, and for one form a "brick wall" I found on the MS Clipart website is perfect. But it's not a bitmap, so I couldn't see a way to use it through Form Properties/Backdrop. So I inserted it as an OLE object (BTW, it's in the Pictures category of Clipart, not the Clipart Category.) I made it cover the whole form.

I added an object for the form title and all the fields & field names, colored everything, and made sure that the Brick Wall was sent To Back, & everything else To Front. I ran it & it looked great.

But when I came to the last record & did Next Record, instead of a blank form w/objects, I really hit a brick wall: that was all I had left! When I scrolled back through, only the fields came back, no field names or other objects. But when I returned to Design view, everything was as before.

I copied the form to a new name, removed the brick wall, and used just a plain dark red background, plus a couple of clipart objects. Then all worked fine. How can I make my brick wall behave itself?

Also, I know it would be better not to put two questions into one post, but I'm trying to save time. I have been losing my Minimize, Maximize, and Close buttons in the upper right of the screen in forms; all that's left are the ones related to Alpha itself. And I've been getting duplicates of commands across the top, such as repeating Form, Record, & Query 3 times.

As you can see, I need help! Can anyone please provide some?

    Thank you!
    Randi

One thing you could do for the "Brick Wall" background would be
to use an image editing program to convert the image to a bitmap.
Then you would be able to use it as a form property/backdrop.
If you don't have any image editing software, send it to me, & I,ll
send you back a bitmap of it.

      Doug,

Thanks for offering to convert the Wall for me; I've just sent it to you. Will d/l a conversion program from zdnet soon. If you got yours there, please let me know the name of a good one, because I may have to do this again.

      I appreciate your help!

        Randi,

I have one called IrfanView that is freeware for individuals (non-commercial use). I think I got it from ZDNet. Can't give you much of a comparison because I haven't used many others but it seems to work well and covers a fairly wide range of formats. If you can't find it, I should have the original zip file somewhere.

You might check on the net for a free (Limited) version of Adobe Photo Shop.
It seems like I heard that you could download it from their site for free...
guess they are trying to set the hook, hoping that you will decide to but.

Another place you can look is www.tucows.com , they have all sorts of
freeware & shareware up for grabs.

            good luck Carol!

              Doug,
Thank you for the bitmap --- it works great! No more "disappearing objects" problems with the form.

                Carol and others.

bitmaps can easily be created in Windows. Just save your image--you can grab it from anyone including the web onto your hard drive. Then open it up in paint. You can find that in the accessories on the start drive. Then save as--a bitmap. works great. Then, use winzip to zip it up and you can send it by e-mail. Open this bit map immage attached and you can see one of our main operations screens.

                good luck

                  Elliot,

Thanks so much for the valuable info! BTW, your screen design was very impressive; it's easy to see that a lot of work went into it -- it does so much. Looking at it is a great lesson in how, with hard work, you can get a multitude of useful functions & info into limited space.
