Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    HELP, error message

    Hello All,

As always I'm in the dark as to what is happening, however this is by far the most confused I've been using Alpha.
I have a networked app, I create some of the operations directly on the server. I have just tried an import operation and received the following error message.
The system can not find the file specified "...C:progra.dbf".

Any help with this is truly appreciated as I'm close to jumping out the window (1st floor mind).

    Cheers
    Tom

    RE: HELP, error message

When Alpha encounters some problems that the error trapping cannot fully describe, it will report the "next best" thing to the real error. (I have seen it report that it could not find the sample "invoice" tables that Alpha installs automatically, when nothing in my app referred to them.) Backtrack through the last changes you made, check to see if the file you are importing from still exists, with the name specified in the import, in the same directory structure. Make sure the file you are importing to is not read-only.

      RE: HELP, error message

      Hello Stan,

Thanks for the quick response, unfortunately I could not even open the said import operation to see where it was pointing etc. I may have messed up but though deleting the import would help, to no avail. Every time I try to create a new import from scratch I am receivng the same error message. It seem to be limited to the existing dbases I have in the same folder, as I have created a new dbase within the folder and created 1 new test table and it let me select the import operation, which it does not even do from the existing dbases. Still v.confused.
      Thanks in advance

      Cheers
      Tom

        RE: HELP, error message

In the control panel, tables tab, are the databases "greyed out" and does the modified column say "not available"? If so Alpha doesn't know where the tables are due to directory structure change or missing files. Does the path indicated in the "full name" column really point at the tables?

Try dropping one of the tables and then re-adding it. You will have to navigate around the directories to find the table just dropped.

Sounds like something has changed to confuse Alpha as to the location of your tables.

          RE: HELP, error message

          Dear Tom,

I note that you have your app networked and the error message reports that the import can't find "C: ..". If you are importing from a workstation, the drive & directory must point to the specific location of the file. So if the file to import is on the "C" drive of the server, A5 won't find it from the workstation. You must either create a consistent virtual drive (i.e. "g" drive connects to server "C") or use the UNC path (i.e. "///server/c:/import_ directory/import_file.txt") By the way, to be consistent, you can create the same virtual drive on the server pointing to the server's drive "C" (in other words drive "G" on the server will be the same as "C" on the server; the first being a virtual drive, the latter a logical drive).

            RE: HELP, error message

In my prior message, I made an error on the UNC path. It should be "serverc:import_directoryimport_file.txt" where "C:" is the assigned share name of the server drive "C".

                RE: HELP, error message

                John & Stan,

Thanks very much for your time and patience, I seem to have half solved the problem, the table that could not be found was indeed greyed out and said 'Not Available', however this was also very confusing as at no stage have I created a .dbf called 'progra' in the database. The half solution I found was to create this table and place it at the root of the c: drive (which is the location Alpha was trying to find it in). I say half solved as I can now create a new import operation, however I do not have the option to amend its design, if I highlight the import and choose design I am taken to the screen as if you had asked to create a new import, srtange huh???.
I realise a lot (all) of this problem is my creation as prior to it I copied the files from the server to my local machine (to test some scripting) during which my system crashed, locked up.
Once again thanks for the advice I'm away from the office now and will let you know how I get on with your suggestion.
Would there be any benefit in unistalling and reinstalling Alpha???

                Cheers
                Tom
