Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Suddenly I cannot edit a table structure. I get get a message saying it is in use by another user. Also can't run database compact and it asks if i want to drop the table from database. I went to explorer and click on the dbf and it says it is the wrong dll. Does anyone know how i can get this fixed?
    Than you,

Rebooting your machine is a good first thought.

      RE: canot edit table structure

      Thanks for the reply Stan,
I tried everthing I could think of. I tried to duplicate the table called "games" and then take the new table "games2" and edit its stucture and save it as "games". Then I am asked if I want to replace the existing "games.dbf" with the new one "games.dbf. When I choose yes i get a message it can't be done because "games is in use somewhere else"
Thank you for any advice. There are not that many records but i don't want to loose my forms.

        RE: canot edit table structure

Alpha thinks games is in use for a reason. If rebooting did not solve the problem, and you have duplicated the table, try closing Alpha and deleting games through windows and/or dos. If you are still denied access to delete the table then something is corrupted in the file information and you might have to use some utility program to delete the file. If you have a bootable floppy, try booting with that and deleting the file.

Can you drop the table from the database and re-add it?

          RE: canot edit table structure

          Thanks Stan,
Still no good. Here is what i did. I went to Windows Explorer and deleted the games.dbf everywhere except in my backup folder and the database it is used in. Went to Alpha5 and duplicated the table "games" and called it "games2". Then I dropped "games" from the database. Went to restructure "games2" and tried to save it as "games". Got a message saying "games" is in use. Shoul delete all games.dbf in dos first? Re entering data is no problem but i really want my forms.
          Thanks again,
          Bob

            Try this

Went to Alpha5 and duplicated the table "games" and called it "games2". Then I dropped "games" from the database.

Now close Alpha, from Explorer delete the games files (.dbf, .ddd, .ddx, etc) in the main database folder.

Reopen Alpha and duplicate games2 as games.

              RE: canot edit table structure

Hi Stan, Please don't give up on me. I think I am narrowing this down. I did what you suggested and I can edit the games table. But as soon as I open and close the two main forms. I get the same message about being used by another session. I tried this several times. Any other suggestions will be appreciated.
              Thank you,
              Bob

                RE: canot edit table structure

That would suggest that something on the two forms is causing the problem. Do you have scripts that control some behind the scenes actions, or write to the table? Once you have closed the forms and restarted Alpha, can you open the form directly in design mode?

Where do you get the message? When you try to enter design mode from form view? When you try to edit the form once it has been opened and closed?

Is the database small enough to compress and attach to a posting here?

                  RE: canot edit table structure

                  Hi Stan,
That was it! Thanks a million! On the "Main Stats" form onInit action I had this script
                  dim layout_ptr as P
                  layout_ptr =:form.load("Enter game")
                  BROWSE2.quick_sort(.f.)
"Enter Game" is the form that contains games.dbf
I thought I was being cool trying to learn XBASIC. Will stick with action scripting. Man what a headache this was. Thanks for all the help. Hope someday I can return the favor. If you are ever in Houston and get a speeding ticket maybe i could bail you out.
                  Thanks again,
                  Bob

Told you we could find it.

Don't give up on xbasic, just be sure you have backups every time you make a major change. Doesn't hurt to keep a running journal of modifications in case you need to "roll back" the last few changes.

Been to Texas, never been to Houston, I'm past my speeding days, not in ahurry any more ----- but I do appreciate the offer!
