Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Status line & runtime version

Everytime that I install the runtime version with the 3 disks supplied, I then run the latest patch to bring it up to latest version, and then I make the necessary folder and copy my application files to it. I design all my forms with the "Hide status bar" box ticked.
However, I always have to make myself a secret way back to the control panel so that I can click on "view", then click on "staus bar" to remove the tick so that my application runs without a status bar line.
I can live with this but I have an application that I wish to post to a client the other side of the country for him to install himself. It seems a bit messy, has anyone found a neater way of doing it???????
    All help appreciated
    David

RE: Status line & runtime version

If you use Wise installer, it can do it for you. You would have to change registry like this:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software - Alpha Software - Alpha Five 4.0 - Application
    StatusBarState = 0

RE: Status line & runtime version

i don't know if any way under xbasic to control the status bar. i will see if we can add that to v5.

      with regard to installing.

i suggest that you get runtime professional. the only difference is that the pro version comes with InstallMaker, a 3rd party installation program.

this will allow you to build a single install that installs the latest build of a5v4 and your app in one installation program.

if you already have runtime, you can upgrade to pro runtime for $99 at www.alphasoftware.com. its a good deal because InstallMaker sells for more than the upgrade price.

RE: Status line & runtime version

        David,

        Hope this helps.

There are two types of status bars, one for the forms and one for the main Alpha Window. I am talking about the latter. I place a Status Bar Toggle Option on my main forms menu so that the user can decide on the display. With the status bar toggled off the user gets more screen space and less clutter . With the toggle on the status info can be available. The user cannot cause any problems here so there is no reason not to include it as a permanent option. You have to remember, that if during development you toggle off, all instance of Alpha default to off and you could be designing forms that are too large for the screen when the bar is toggled on again.
