Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Auto pop-up seems weak?

    4.9
    The auto pop-up works when entering the field ok;
but how does one get the items to display
immediately without having to "hit" the smart-button?
It seems the ONLY way to see the choice of items?
They don't display automatically like in the old Alpha4,
    ver4.
Vexing, and hope I'm just missing something!
    THANKS

i assume you are talking about field rule, lookup rules, table lookups?

if so, you can set them to auto-popup. for example, see the sample invoice app that ships with a5v4. open the invoice form. enter a new invoice. when you get to customer_id, note that the lookup opens automatically

Selwyn, Thanks much. Yes, I see in the sample you
mentioned that lookup opens there automatically.
JUST what I want; but I've been trying with a "simple
list" or "cascading list" (1st 2 choices) under
the lookup rules and then entering a list of months to be selected upon as I enter the field. Now perhaps with those choices it will NOT open without my hitting the "smart-button" to open them.
That is the extra step I'm trying to avoid. But
I'll work on it; perhaps making a little table of
the mentioned "dates" ( for it to be a "look-up table" ) Thanks for sending me in the right direction: i.e, to study the "Table-Lookup" option under the lookup rules.

        Howard,

Have you selected the popup-on-enter option? Are you saying that this option does not work with a simple list?

Many people miss the auto-popup (and related) part of this rule because you need to scroll down in the window to find it. Make sure you've looked all the way down.

            Steve

I have checked "auto-pop" up for the field.
            I have checked "simple-list". Entered 4 values
yet upon entering field I do not get an opening
so that I see the choices...but a little smart
button that I now have to click to see the
            list of items.
In the User's guide it infers that is the
default method. Wondering if anyone sees a
way around that? Again, to get an opening when
simple list is chosen under edit rules.....
            lookup....simplelist... and pop-up option.

              Bill,
Yes, that is the problem. Using simple list
option I do NOT get an opening to see the
              list of items.
Wondering what other people get. I do get a
"simple button" that must then be clicked to open
the drop-down list. Seems to be the default?
              thanks.

                i created a simple list.
                checked the "auto popup checkbox"
                ran the form.
                the combo box opened automatically.

                  RE: Auto pop-up seems weak?

Selwyn, Thank you for seeing that the simple
list works for you and letting me know!
                  I've looked carefully and I keep trying,thinking
maybe I missed something. But, no, list does
not open up. Only little tab comes up...which
must be then as another step, clicked on to see the
                  mentioned list.
I've reinstalled and even put on my home computer
and same failure in this pop-up option.
But thanks for informing me of you success with
the list choice. Will most likely ask for new
                  disc (?)

Could it be that list does not pop-up when in change mode. Isn't this normal behaviour?
We can make it pop-up in change mode by placing
                    sys_send_keys("{Alt-Down}")

                    on field's OnArrive event.

Jake, YES indeed. That WAS the problem. Did
not realize that as one enters the field it
becomes a "changed mode" that alters behavior
Makes sense, though, even for a pilgrim like me to see.
I needed your send-keys info to
make it occur. And thus it works fine now !!!!!!
And more incentive now on my partto read up on these other
enhancements that will make Alpha5 function
                      even better.
                      Thanks again.

The auto popup works fine when enterubg a new record.

HOWEVER, when editing that field after record is saved it wiil
not popup automativcally. Will someone confirm this?

Also, I believe there is a keyboard way to get a popop in lieu
of using the mouse. I forgot the hey combo. Will some please
                        enlughten me on this? Thsnks.

If I remember correctly, you can set a conditional pop-up expression like
                          isblank("FieldName")
to have it pop-up. If the field has a value it doesn't.

I had the same problem on trying to enter a filled field
and edit it with no complete opening of the list.
See the answer from Jake Vuckovic (MSGID 19003) as his
                            answer solved the problem nicely.
When one is entering the field a changed mode is occuring and the default is not to open.
YOu have to follow Jake's advice which corrects that.
