Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    calculated field in a subreport

I am trying to design a report which uses data from a parent table and 3 child tables. There is a one to many link at the same level on 2 of the tables. I need to place data from the child tables in specific rows and columns on the report. If I filter the subreport on 2 criteria linked to the parent table (TEST->DATE=LDS.AND.Test->Test="inh") and use an if statement to print the necessary value, if(Test->Unit=System1,str(Test->Testresult,7,2)," ") the report prints a blank space even when the child should evaluate to true. If I make each box on the report a subreport and add the Test->Unit=System1 to the filter the value will print. I'm just not sure if this is a good idea because it would require about 50 subreports. I read through some posts on this subject and there was mention of ordering the first subreport to prevent this but I tried this and I still get a blank space. The report is for a company that needs to send test results based on multiple test sites at each location. The report is grouped on the account number of each location. The child tables containing the one to many links are linked by the account number. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you

    Jeff,

Are you sure that your subreport filters are in the 'detail' of the subreport using SCANNING("child_table_name").AND. ..filter here

Re: calculated field in a subreport

Tom, I put the filter expression in when I inserted the subreport. Instead of using the default filter on the child table I chose the specify filter option. This will give me the value I want in each box, as long as I create a subreport for each value. If I use the default filter SCANNING(child table) and add the extra filtering parameters the entire report fails. The selected records don't all print, records that shouldn't print and the detail and group header disappear on some pages. I need to get the single values from all 3 child tables based on data from the parent and 2 of the child tables. If I could use the subreports for 1-3 columns and a calculated field for each of the 6 lines I would only have to use 6 subreports instead of 48. I don't know if I'm scanning the wrong child table. I'm using either of the one to many tables depending on whether the value is contained in that table. The subreport for each value will work, I just don't know if it will cause problems due to the high number of reports.

      Thank You

        Jeff,

On pages 137/138 of the Alpha User Guide .pdf there is a perfect example of what I believe are your requirements.

Re: calculated field in a subreport

Michael, I reread the manual and tried setting up the subreport as outlined in the manual. If I don't try to filter the data with a calculated field, the report works fine. My mistake was trying to use calculated fields to return the data. If I filter in the subreport detail section and use one report for each column I can get the results in the proper place on the form. I still need 8 subreports, but its better than 48.

          Thank you
