Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

The BETWEEN Expression & a Printer problem

I have a couple of wee problems that perhaps someone out on the web can help me with

I am doing something stupid in trying to write a filter statement using the "Between" (..) statement. Can someone please help by telling me the correct systax for extracting items between two dates and oblige?

The other problem is that I installed a new Epson printer (a C900 Laser) and set it as the default printer. I now notice I cannot set the paper size property to A4. However, when I change the default printer to one of my other printers all is OK. I suspected the printer driver and have even checked with Epson but they are saying it is not a problem with the driver but that it is a problem with the Alpha software. Has anyone else out there had a similar problem and have they found a solution to this?

On the first problem see the articles "Mysteries of Query Syntax" at www.learn alpha.com. The accompanying catalog can be very useful, too.

What printer has been "setup" in Alpha Five, using the File menu from the Control Panel?

Are you running XP? If so have you set Win2000 compatibility yet?

RE: The BETWEEN Expression & a Printer problem

        Thanks for replying

        I am using Windows XP

I have the Epson C900 printer set up as default with its paper size set to A4 Portrait.

        Problem explained in detail
        1. Everything was OK within Windows 2000
        2. Now in XP if I change the default printer to an Epson inkjet all is OM
        3. When I change the default printer to Epson C900 laser I cannot see any paper sizes in the Report Properties " Page window - there are none listed. However when I print the document all is OK if the paper sixe is a genuine A4 but, if it is a landscape layout, all is not OK even if I change the printers defailt to Landscape at the time of printing.
        4. If I transport the application over to another machine using an HP4 laser printer all is OK
        5. Alpha seems to detect there is a problem when it comes to print as it shows the report running off the paper stating things are not right for this report
        6. I contacted Epson and they say the fault lies within Alpha not in the driver - easy for them and of course they would say that eh?

Jim, thanks for the details. However, you didn't answer either question. Let me try again.

          1) if you open alpha five and go to the control panel, click on File, then click Printer Setup. What do you see?

          2) XP permits you to run older programs (like A5v4) using special compatibility modes that may be needed and which are no longer supported in XP. Right click on the shortcut you use to start your database. Check properties. Have you set "compatability mode" to Windows 2000? If not, you should.
