Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    tablesum() help

    Having a problem with tablesum(). The first three lines work fine as shown but when I try to use "filter" in place of 10000 it returns Error: no such field. If I change it to var-"filter it returns Error: filter expression not logical.

    filter = 10000
    x = tablesum("c:\ted's auto\summary.dbf","invocno = 10000","Partsincome")
    ?x
    = 38.250000

    x = tablesum("c:\ted's auto\summary.dbf","invocno = filter","Partsincome")
    ERROR: no such field

    x = tablesum("c:\ted's auto\summary.dbf","invocno = var-"filter","Partsincome")

          This worked for me

          ? tablesum("dcinv","bin = 50","onhand")
          = 673.000000

          test = 50
          ? tablesum("dcinv","bin = "+var-"test,"onhand")
          = 673.000000

          I notice in your second set of attempts you changed to

          "summary-"Partsincome" instead of "Partsincome".

          Try again without that.

            RE: tablesum() help

            I have a table which contains records of sales of parts, labor costs, and sublabor costs, by invoice number. Parts are broken down to initial cost, markup, and totalcost (inital cost + markup). To calculate taxes I must get the totalcost for each invoice and then multiply each seperate invoices totalcost by .06558. The total tax collected would then be calculated by adding the total tax collected on each invoice. Can't total all of the totalcost for all of the invoices and multiply by tax % because of the rounding up or down of taxes collected on each individual invoice. I can't seem to find a way to accomplish this because I keep running into problems with Total() and Tablesum(). does anyone have any ideas? Will attach a copy of the database with this message which includes a couple of codes where I attempted to get it done.

                  If summary.dbf is in the same directory with all your other files, and it should be, you don't need the full path specification.

                        Have you rebooted recently? I just repeated my earlier test and got the same result.

                        You should reboot and try again.

                        I also created an ran the following script

                        cinvoc = 10037
                        ttax = tablesum("summary.dbf", "invocno = "+var-"cinvoc , "Partsincome") * .06558
                        ui_msg_box("Displaying","Tablesum for invocno " + var-"cinvoc +" is " + var-"ttax)

                        Screenshot of result is attached.

                          Hi Stan.
                          when I run the script you posted in the inactive I get the results shown below. Same after rebooting my system.

                          cinvoc = 10037
                          ttax = tablesum("summary.dbf", "invocno = "+var-"cinvoc , "Partsincome") * .06558

                          ERROR: ttax not found.

                          Even stranger I can get the following script to run sometimes, then get the error message argument is incorrect data type next time. Are you running windows XP. I am begining to think that may be part of my problem as some other parts of my program works fine on a windows ME operating system but fails on Windows XP.

                          dim cinvoc as n
