The Alpha Software Forum Participation Guidelines

The Alpha Software Forum is a free forum created for Alpha Software Developer Community to ask for help, exchange ideas, and share solutions. Alpha Software strives to create an environment where all members of the community can feel safe to participate. In order to ensure the Alpha Software Forum is a place where all feel welcome, forum participants are expected to behave as follows:
  • Be professional in your conduct
  • Be kind to others
  • Be constructive when giving feedback
  • Be open to new ideas and suggestions
  • Stay on topic


Be sure all comments and threads you post are respectful. Posts that contain any of the following content will be considered a violation of your agreement as a member of the Alpha Software Forum Community and will be moderated:
  • Spam.
  • Vulgar language.
  • Quotes from private conversations without permission, including pricing and other sales related discussions.
  • Personal attacks, insults, or subtle put-downs.
  • Harassment, bullying, threatening, mocking, shaming, or deriding anyone.
  • Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
  • Sexually explicit or violent material, links, or language.
  • Pirated, hacked, or copyright-infringing material.
  • Encouraging of others to engage in the above behaviors.


If a thread or post is found to contain any of the content outlined above, a moderator may choose to take one of the following actions:
  • Remove the Post or Thread - the content is removed from the forum.
  • Place the User in Moderation - all posts and new threads must be approved by a moderator before they are posted.
  • Temporarily Ban the User - user is banned from forum for a period of time.
  • Permanently Ban the User - user is permanently banned from the forum.


Moderators may also rename posts and threads if they are too generic or do not property reflect the content.

Moderators may move threads if they have been posted in the incorrect forum.

Threads/Posts questioning specific moderator decisions or actions (such as "why was a user banned?") are not allowed and will be removed.

The owners of Alpha Software Corporation (Forum Owner) reserve the right to remove, edit, move, or close any thread for any reason; or ban any forum member without notice, reason, or explanation.

Community members are encouraged to click the "Report Post" icon in the lower left of a given post if they feel the post is in violation of the rules. This will alert the Moderators to take a look.

Alpha Software Corporation may amend the guidelines from time to time and may also vary the procedures it sets out where appropriate in a particular case. Your agreement to comply with the guidelines will be deemed agreement to any changes to it.



Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Disappears Fields & Records

    I am using version 4.5 and have run into a wierd thing.
    Some of my record fields go blank when I try to update one of the field that has a look up list - even the account number goes away. Also some records have entirely disappeared! I have no idea why this is happening. So far the records affected have not been really important ones but it concerns me that something could happen to others that are important. I have no idea why this happens and I cannot seem to reenter the records either. Does anyone have an idea of what might cause this strange behavior?

    A useful starting point is to go to the control panel and choose Database Compact off the File menu. This will delete and pack your tables and dictionaries.

    Then view the table with the missing records using the Default Form to verify that the records are in fact missing.
    Do this by right clicking the table name or icon in the control panel, and choose Open Default Form from the drop down menu.

        Perhaps another useful bit of information to consider is that records will "disappear" if they do not satisfy the current filter in effect.

        Make sure you have issued a show all command and view the table in default browse mode.
        There can be only one.

          Thanks for the idea. There are still refcords missing - did a "Show All" too. Some are completely gone and others are there with most of the information including their account numbers missing - it is sorted on the account numbers and the records are in the proper place but no number in the field. This is strange. I tried to reenter the record info on one of the blanked out records (change the account # from auto to manual) and it took the information but when I went to the next record I got these error messages:
          SH31W32.DLL and MFC40.DLL and it shut down - have not done anything since.
          Any suggestions?

            I suggest you scan for virus activity, and then reinstall A5V4, patched to build 266.

              No Viruses - keep the database on completely different computer that has no internet connection anyway. I can try reinstalling v4.5 but do not understand what you mean by patch to build 266.
              Is there some place to look up error message codes? I would like to know what those codes mean.

                If it shows Version 4.5 (Build 266) you're current. There would be no need to install an update (patch).

                  If you still are unable to edit and save records using the field rule table lookup and the default form for the table, my final suggestion is to zip a complete copy of the database and post it here with instructions (step by step) for us to follow in order to trigger the same fault.

                    We are experiencing the same problem as you, when editing lines in a browse relating to a particular job record we find that one of lines of information will disappear.

                    The replies that you have recieved seem unsatisfactory have you made any further progress, we would also be interested.

                        I use a browse to check off end of month items and whenever
                        I check one off near the bottom ( I am entering a date in my situation ) it disappears (off the screen) but not from
                        the file. If I continue checking off more items below it then it reappears. Its strange. This was a problem in v4.0
                        and also in v4.5 (maybe not a Alpha problem, but in my appl)

                          This sounds like a video display adapter issue. You might try:

                          1) eliminating any hardware acceleration for your display adapter;

                          2) installing more recent video display adapter drivers; and

                          3) adjusting the vertical size of the browse object slightly.

                            Tom, if you were responding to my reply, I tried widening the browse rows to about 1/2 inch and it still does it. This is my 3rd computer I have used this on and it does it on all of them. It's no big deal with me since it reappears
                            when I go to the next row and enter something. Not an expert on the video accerators and drivers so I'll just live with the little bug.

                              I had the same problem, What happened to me is I had a look up field and forgot to add the data to it. I had a field "who received credit" and in child database did not add the salespersons id, I also found that if the id is say FN "CAPS" and you put in fn "lower case" it takes more time to validate. I would make sure your lookup data is correct.
