Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Creating a new table access error

After creating a new empty database, I tried to create a NEW OBJECT "table from scratch". I got the following error message.
    ERROR ACCESS IS DENIED
c:\programfiles\A5v4\A_launch.ddd occurred while trying to start application.

What does this mean, and what do I do??

    Andrea,

Not sure we can tell from the information you've posted.

There are restrictions on the characters that can be used in table and field names. You might review your choices against the rules to see if perhaps you specified illegal names.

You might also open other databases to confirm that your Alpha Five is running ok.

RE: Creating a new table access error

Tom, thank you for replying. I have used some of my other databases and they seem to work fine. I'm having trouble with the new database I'm trying to set up. When I tried to create a table so I can enter data, I clicked on NEW and got the New Object menu. If I check "create a new table from scratch" I get the Error access is denied popup. If I check "use a pre-defined table template" it will continue through the process of creating a table. I wanted to set up my own table - not the pre-defined ones. I'm not even getting to the point of table and field names, so character restrictions are not the problem. Do I have a program problem?
      Thanks, Andrea

Perhaps. (wish I could say authoritatively, but I've never hit the snag you're getting).

Have you tried reinstalling alpha Five?

Not a long term solution to your problem, just a workaround...

"I wanted to set up my own table - not the pre-defined ones"

Set up one of the pre-defined ones, change all the field names and definitions, add some field names and definitions, add field rules, change some field rules, change the table name, delete some indexes, add some indexes.

          You'll have your custom table.
          There can be only one.

Stan, Thank your for your reply. This sound like it should work. I'll try it. Will this change the pre-defined tables or just the table in the database I'm using it in?

                Not really sure...

Unzip the attached file, "basis", to the directory of your choice and modify as desired. This is a single field seed table, one field, character, one space in the field.

Duplicate as desired, add fields.......................change field definitions..................rename.......................

Or you could take a table you already have

Duplicate as desired, add fields.......................change field definitions..................rename.......................

Stan, Using a a table I already have sound interesting. I may be unable to go on line until late Friday again. I'll let you know how it works. Thanks again, Andrea
