Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Writing data from a set to a new dbf

    I Know there Has to be a way, but i cant figure out how to write the data of the fields in the linked file of a set. I can write the master files field but not the linked files fields using xbasic to fetch thru set in a while not eof loop .

    Thanks in advance for any suggestions

    Darrell,

    First thought here would be to use a new set, inverting the original sequence of your tables, linking 1:1.

      Hello Darrell,

      The following script assumes that you have a table named "YourSecondTable", in the AlphaSports database. It also assumes that the structure of "YourSecondTable" is identical to the Invoice_Items table in the AlphaSports database.

      t = table.get("Invoice_items")
      t2 = table.open("YourSecondTable")
      vRecNo = t.recno()
      t.fetch_first()

      while .not. t.fetch_eof()
      vdata = t.record_data_get()
      t2.enter_begin()
      t2.record_data_set(vdata)
      t2.enter_end()
      t.fetch_next()

      end while
      t2.close()
      t.fetch_goto(vRecno)

      The reason I get the record number of the Invoice_Items table, then reset the record pointer at the end of the script is that I am manipulating the record pointer via Xbasic. The form knows nothing of this after the script ends, if I didn't reset the record number pointer you might see some strange behavior in the form.

      If the structure of your two tables are not identical, instead of using the *.Record_data_set() and *.Record_data_get() methods you'd just field by field set the data such as:

      t2.field1 = t.someField
      t2.field2 = t.someOtherField
      etc.

      Good luck,
      Jim

        Darrell,

        Yet another approach would be to use nested while .. end while loops to step through the records in your original set.

        To do this you'd establish pointers to the primary and child tables in the current set. The outer loop would step through the primary table. The inner loop would step through the linked child table records, reading and then writing the field values to the target table as you go.

        Personally, I think building an inverted set design would be easier, but ...

          Here's an example, using the nested loops approach.

          Unzip the attachment to an empty folder.

          Open the only form. the form is based on a simple two table one to many set. The only button on the form copies the child table records to another table.

          Check the code tab of the control panel for the 'CopyPhones' script. It does the same thing, but is designed to be used when the orignal set is not already open.
