Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    "Empty" fields

This is connected to a previous thread, but a separate query in its own right:

How do I print a border around an RTF field, in a report, where the field contained in the RTF is empty (or all blanks)? I can't really see the logic of what seems to be the default condition, ie, not printing the border when there happens not to be a value in the field.

    Thanks,

    Martin.

    RE:

    Martin,

this is really going to confuse you.

Fill the empty field with blank spaces.

      You're right; it did!

Do you mean, put ten spaces in a field whose width is 10? I tried that and it didn't make any difference. It seems as if blanks are completely ignored. If, for instance, a field is aligned to the left and the field contains " : ", the first two blanks are ignored in the report, and ": " is displayed.

      Er....

        Re: Empty fields

Either you're overlooking something, or the rtf object is affecting the display. I would have thought that the string:

        Code:
        " "
would have been passed straight through.

I believe one of the things the RTF does is trim any expressions placed inside it.Put a few fields in one and you will see this.
Another solution would be to use a conditional object and if there is something there show the rich text and if nothing there show a frame.

Yes, that's what's happening with me. I thought I'd had a brainwave last night: put a dot in every empty field (so that the border prints) then conditionally change the font colour of any field containing just a dot to white!

Tried to do it this morning but there doesn't seem to be a way to activate colour equations with RTFs.

            Unless anyone knows otherwise.....?

Thanks Tom and John. I'll have to try your conditional object idea. It seems a long-winded way to draw a line, though. Is version 5 any more straightforward?

            Thanks again.

              John,

Yes, I see that now, and recall having seen it before. Sorry 'bout that, Martin! It's why our mailing labels are so easy to produce.

                Experiment.
Don't put any border on the RTF and put a frame object around it.I think it will expand.
                or
Put a single character in the rich text just before your expression.Make the font of that white or whatever your background color is.

                  Re: Empty fields

Thanks, John, I tried the second of your suggestions, putting a "white" dot at the end of each field within its RTF. Very fiddly to do, but it works. Important that the dot (or whatever character is used) is the same size and font as the other field(s) as making it smaller (which I thought, at first, would be a good idea) just makes the height of the boxes slightly too small.

This, combined with help from Tom in another thread, means that, at last, this horribly-complicated report seems to work!

                  Backup, backup, backup..........
