Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Memo

This is probably a very basic question but how do I get the memos to expand and stay that way so I can see what they say? I have a copy of "Learning Alpha Five"
Not very helpful I'd say. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    James Welsh

"This is probably a very basic question but how do I get the memos to expand and stay that way so I can see what they say?" - In a browse, on a form, where? Stay open all the time or just while you're examining the memo? Clicking in the upper right hand corner of a memo field opens the memo editor.

Create a fixed width text field if that's what you want. The whole rationale of a memo field is that it can store data of indeterminate length.
    There can be only one.

      RE: Memo

Thanks for the reply. I already have the data in my file I just don't know how to keep the memo box open. I don't know much about data bases. I used Alpha 3 way back in DOS but that was a long tme ago. I upped to Alpha 5 and I'm having a few problems that I'll work ou I hope.
I would do what you suggested but I really don't know how.

      Thanks again,
      James Welsh

In the Alpha control panel, tables/sets tab, right click on the table name that has the memo field. Choose "Edit Structure". Go to the bottom of the list of field names and begin entering a new name. Tab to the next column and choose "Character", column will default to whatever the previous row contains. Tab to the next column and set the field width, maybe something like 40, tab again and leave at zero.

Go to the file menu at the top left of the Alpha screen and choose save. Close the structure window. You will now have added a simple character field to your table.

Go to the operations tab of the control panel. Click the new button just above the tab. Choose "Update Records" in the left column, choose your table name in the right column, click on the "create" button. In the left column, type in or choose the name of the new character field. In the next column, type in or choose the memo field name. Leave last column empty.
Click on the "lightning bolt" "Run" button near the top center of the Alpha screen. Message will appear telling you how many records were processed. Your "memo" data should now be in the character field.

You can remove the memo field from the table when you are satisfied with the results by steps similar to adding the character field. Just hilight the row with the memo "type", hit the delete key, and save.
        There can be only one.
