Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Specifying unique records

How do you specify that a filter only include unique records. I want to create a new database that only includes unique records for a given field. How do you specify that as a filter expression?

    RE: Specifying unique records

    Richard,

The validation field rule would a good place to start.

I think it will work well, especially in a single user, stand alone, environment. If you're designing for a multi-user networked setting you may want to search this forum for related threads cause some folks have had difficulties. Search for threads that contain the word validation or the word unique or the word duplidate.

If you don't use the field rule, you can build your own custom validation routines into form level events on your data entry form.

      RE: Specifying unique records

More specifically, when copying to a new database, I only want unique records for the "Category" field. I want to specify this in the filter that is part of the "Copy" process, but I do not know how to write this as an expression. Is there a function to specify unique records for a certain field, such as unique("category") or the like?

        Richard,

Those are very different questions. My initial response won't be of much help.

This highlights one of the limitations of the message board format. Often it takes a string of posts, questions, and posts to get down to a description of the actual problem.

Richard, I'm not picking on you. It takes a while to get a feel for 'how much' is 'enough', when trying to decide what level of detail to include. I find it helpful when framing a question for a new topic to try to answer these questions, assuming the reader must answer them blindfolded:

        1) what, exactly, am I trying to do?

        2) where, exactly, am I trying to do it? (field rules, form layout, report layout, saved operation, user defined function, etc)

        3) when, exactly, do I want it to happen? (on button push, when saving, before saving, etc.)

        4) what, exactly, have I tried to do on my own (search for other useful topics, attempt script, etc) ?

        5) what, exactly, was the result?

          Richard,

I don't recall a function that you could use to limit the range of records you want to copy to the new database. Perhaps others will have some ideas along that line.

In the meantime, here are two ideas for you:

          1) Create the other table by duplicating the structure of the existing table.

          2) Write a short script to open the existing table; set an index which specifies unique values; step through the table one record at a time, entering values of the existing table into new records in the new table.

          or

          3) Duplicate the table AND its data to the new table; define a unique index there; activate the unique index so your browse display shows only unique categories. Mark all the displayed records. Switch to a different index, showing all the records in the table. Delete all the Unmarked records. This will leave you with only unique categories.

            Hi Tom,
Thanks for the advice. I used your number 3 advice, and that worked fine. I specified .not.marked() on the unmark/mark/delete card to delete the duplicate records.
