Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    network use

I recently purchased a copy of Alpha 5v5 (via v4.5 path) to begin migration to Windows from DOS. Version 5 seems to have added the requirement that software be permanently 'attached' to one particular computer. I am wondering how the network packs and additional license copies would function on our network.

We currently use a 5-user network pack for Alpha 4v6, and have added 2 additional single copy user/licenses to the system. Any 7 of our 10-12 user workstations are able to simultaneously access a common (or independent) database, as long as no more than 7 user/licenses are active at once. I believe v5 will not allow us to continue with this configuration. If we purchase a 5-user network pack and two additional copies of v4.5 instead of v5 will we be able to legally and physically maintain this same configuration and functionality?

We do wish to maintain this very important functionality and we desire to remain in complete conformity with the EULA. If you could please provide some information on the network packs I would appreciate it.

    Thank You,
    Mickey Anderson

Although A5V4.5 and A5V5 are both Windows programs, they are different enough that they can not be used to open the same databases. A5V5 will open and run a A5V4.5 database, however, the opposite is not true since A5V5 has additional features that the earlier version can not recognize.

The way networking operates in A5 is that each terminal has the operating program loaded locally. Each local computer then creates a "shadow" copy of the master database which is on the server. In fact, the server does not need a copy of the operating program if the database will never be accessed directly from that computer.

If you have a 5 user network version, any 5 users can access the master at any given time. This information is saved in the database muf file saved on the server. I may be incorrect, but I think if you try to access the database with a single user license from a terminal, you will be locked out if any other user is logged on.

          RE: network use

Update for anyone interested. After speaking with customer service, it is just as I suspected. Alpha Five Version 5 network packs are licensed by number of hardware installations, rather than number of concurrent users. The "5 Uuser Network Pack" should really be "5 Workstation Network Pack."

In contrast, Alpha Five V4.5 allows unlimited hardware (workstation) installations on the same network, and tracks concurrent use to the number of installed user licenses. eg: With one 5 user pack on V4.5, I can use ANY one of our 12 (or more) workstations to access a database. This functionality would require THREE 5 user packs with V5 (unless you tried to make use of the gratuitious "2nd computer" installation allowed).

Looks like we will use V4.5. Thanks for your input.
