Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Network Experts

    Hi All,

I have not much experience with networking, only my own test creation that is never used in the real world.

My Application is running on many stand alone computers but as yet not on a network. I now have requests to supply my Runtime Application for use on a network. My customers seldom have any computer knowledge and cannot be expected to do much else other than click the buttons that I have placed in the app. So Installation has to be simple.

If I know the paths on my clients server and workstations, is there any reason why I cannot create my CD installation routine already setup with a pre-defined shadow created on my computer.

In other words, install the app on the server and then the Runtime and a ready made shadow on the work station so avoiding the hassle of talking my clients through optimizing?

Would this work? It would help if I could understand exactly what the optimisation did, I know it creates a shadow but is this a simple copy of key files or is there more to the process.

Appreciate any thoughts from any of you networking experts.
    Michael

    Michael,

I'm not a hardware guy, either, and will be watching for suggestions from more experienced folks, but if it were me,
I'd talk them through the setup, and then assist them with at least one network optimization. You could then copy everything from that one workstation's shadow folder to the other workstations. This ASSUMES that all workstations 'see' the server the same way. i.e. as the same mapped drive; and they all must have read / write privileges to the shared folder on the 'server'.

Michael, give serious consideration to being present when the installation occurs, either personally, or via something like pcAnywhere. In my limited experience there's always something that pops up which is unexpected.

      Tom,

If it is possible to transfer the shadow from one work station to another, is it not possible for me to simply create the shadow on my computer and include this in my install routine? So completely avoiding any optimisation. The application is static, once installed does not need any changes.

I know the paths on the work station and the server so I could set duplicate the situation first on my compute. Unfortunately, I do not have access to any network setup that I can run a test.

If you create a shadowed installation with exactly the same path information a terminal will have to a server, then you can create an installation routine using the shadowed database information. The key is that the path to the server on this shadow must be exactly the same as the user will have on their terminal.

For example, I have installations that map a drive letter directly to the server directory that contains the main copy, such as m:\. The whole path for a terminal is m:\mydatabase.adb. I then open the main database from the terminal using this path and run network optimize to create a shadowed copy on the terminal. The path information saved in the shadow is m:\mydatabase.adb. Now I create an installation using only the files on the shadowed terminal. Everything is fine as long as the user maps the path to the server directory exactly the same on every terminal. The new installation of the shadow does not have to be in the same directory as the original shadow since the only critical information is the path back to the server.

This takes care of the initial installation. Now you still need a method to keep the terminals up to date. A5V5 has built in options to do this, but in older versions, you need to create your own. Refresh_shadow() is not always reliable, so I would suggest searching the code archive. There are a couple options there.

          Jerry,

Thanks, this is what I was hoping to do.

In your experience, if no changes are made to the application, is a Refresh() ever required.

If not changes are ever made to the database on the master (server), you would never need refresh. However, most databases need a correction or change from time to time, at least in the intial stages of implementation.
