Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Convert Apps from 4.5 to 5?

Is there a conversion feature for converting an applications forms, data tables and feild rules
built in version 4.5 to version 5. Can you just copy all of your working files over to a new directory and install the new runtime for V5 or can you install the v5 runtim e into the existing directory that contains the 4.5 runtime?

RE: Convert Apps from 4.5 to 5?

The vast majority of applications (forms, reports, tables, letters, etc.) move from A5v4.x to A5v5 with no problems at all. Version 5 does some conversion work and once done, your layouts cannot be opened and used in version 4.x. Therefore...

It seems to me that the best approach would be to install v5 to its own directory, then copy the folder(s) holding your application and open the COPY with version 5. That way, if there are any problems, you still have your original data that can run under version 4.x while things get sorted out.

I'm also not sure what the situation is with attempting the conversion with just a runtime version. You may need to open your app with the full version, allow the conversion to happen, then use it with the runtime.

There have been a few "issues" in converting apps to version 5 because version 5 has added some words to it's "reserved words" list (words version 5 uses as function names, etc.) If folks had used those new reserved words for field, table, or layout names in their version 4.x applications version 5 appears to attempt to rename the offending objects and get on with business, but if you run into this situation and unless you want to continue to see the warnings each time the application runs, I believe you need to open your application in the full version and resave it.

There have been other conversion issues for a very small number of applications. The Alpha folks have been very responsive in trying to track them down and deal with them.

Download the latest patches for version 5 and install them. Good luck.

      Paul,

I appreciate the input. I want to see if I understand what
your telling me so here goes.I go into Alpha5V5 and open the file and save it in a new directory with the full version of Alpha5v5. Just the adb file or each table and form?

        Fred

If all of your tables and support files are in the same directory as the database, create a new directory and copy everything to the new directory. Open A5V5 and select the database from the new directoy.

Nearly everything is v4.5 will open and convert fine in v5. There are a few minor issues, but most users should have no problems at all. However, as Paul indicates, once you have opened the forms etc in V5, they probably can't be accessed in v4.5.
