Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    If Blank DOB Field, Then Blank Age Field

    I'm using this script as a function to show an age. I want to add code so that if the DOB field is empty, the age field will also be empty. (right now it shows 2002)

    I've fiddled around with it (such as: if(isblank, etc.) but haven't hit on the right code. Where and what code to I add to do this?

    Thanks, kenn

    Age = year(date())-year(DOB)
    if val(right(cdate(DOB),4)) > val(right(cdate(date()),4))
    age = age - 1
    end if

    end function
    TYVM :) kenn

    I'll take a stab at it. I have the same field in one of my tables. I made the DOB field required as well as the valaidation to be grater than 0. It keep people from skipping the field.

      RE: If Blank DOB Field, Then Blank Age Field

      Ken, I recall struggling with this some time ago. Finally reached the conclusion that in some cases an empty date field is evaluated by Alpha Five as though it has two slash marks in it, even if there are no date, month, or year values which must be separated.

      Code:
      i.e.  {  /  /    }

      So, I used a function that would convert the date field to char string, and then another function to trim it of blanks. This 'removes' the slashes, and if the field is empty, the trim 'removes' the blanks. So, if the resulting value has a zero length the original date field is empty.

      If(len(alltrim(dtos(mydatefield)))=0,"My date field is blank","My date field is not blank")

      Maybe this will help in your case. -- tom

        Ken,

        Have you figured this out?

        Try this -

        Place a Calc_field on the form - just for user viewing.

        Calc_field = IF(year(dob)

          TP,

          I presume the 'Calc_field' part of the expression represents the name of the calculated field. If so, it can't be used until the calculated field is saved which can't be saved until a vaild field name exists. Make sense?
          Kind of catch 22.

            Ken,

            I was assuming you had a form and on the form you defined a Calc_field with the expression above. Drop the field on the form, and when the dob field changes, the age shows and if you delete the dob field, the calc_field is blank.

            Behind the scenes, if you had a calc field defined in field rules for a field in your table, that could hold 0 or number since noone would see it.

            Is this not what you want or a deriaviation (sp) of this?

              Tom,

              I figered it out. Slooow me. Whenever I see an expression like:

              Calc_field = IF(year(dob)
