Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Action scripting example

I am new to A5 and was working with the action scripting example in the xbasic manual. I followed the documentation and can run the script from the code tab of the control panel. When I execute the buttons from the form "Printwhat" nothing happens. When I push the "Preview" and "Print" buttons I am returned to the control panel. Is their an additional step to attaching the script to the form and buttons that I missed? I also set up a similar form and script for an application of my own with the same result.

    Thanks for any help.

    RE: Action scripting example

Jeff, one of the neat things about this message board is it's ability to accept uploads of user databases. Zip your example database and attach it to a message here, including a text file or message which explains how (step by step) to trigger the fault. Depending upon how a script is written the context in which it is run often makes a big difference. Volunteers here will take a look at your script, offer suggestions, and explanations.

      RE: Action scripting example

      Jeff,

I've dug out my manual and have read the instructions for the script and form you are building. I think I can see the problem.

The script "PrintInvoice" is designed to be run from the code tab. It may also be run from a button on any form OTHER than 'PrintWhat'.

Try this to see if I'm right.

Create a new form, put a button on it. For the button select the option to run or use a single built-in command, and choose, play a script. Select the 'PrintInvoice' script. Then save the new form using a form name that's different from 'PrintWhat'. Close the form. Open it. Push the button. The script should run fine.

If I'm on the right track here's what's going on. The script itself loads the 'PrintWhat' form as a dialog, and uses the button pushes from that form to decide whether to preview, print, or whatever. If you put that script in a button on the 'PrintWhat' form the script tries to open ANOTHER copy of the 'PrintWhat' form. When this occurs Alpha Five gives the second instance of the form a different name automatically. (Probably 'PrintWhat1') This causes later commands in the script to fail because they don't know the formname has changed.

This is an illustration of something you'll run into often. In Alpha Five (and in Windows, generally) the context in which a script runs is an essential part of the design, and may not be taken for granted.

      Make sense?

        RE: Action scripting example

Tom, thanks for the reply. The problem was in my A5 inexperience. After rereading manual and your message I was able to the get the script's to work. Just had to duplicate the example separately for each button from the "Printwhat" form and everything worked as intended.

          Jeff,

If you really want to see some cool action scripting, check out v5. A5V5is now available in a trial version. Compared to v5, v4's action scripting is a drop in the bucket.
