Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Control panel empty

I have an app running on a Novell 5.1 server with Win2KPro workstations. The app is "launched" with NAL with a startup form so users can only go where the app lets them.
(i.e. no access to the Control Panel)

Yesterday afternoon the app would no longer launch and gave the error that something was missing in the autoexec file, "cannot load 'start form'". (the startup form)
After getting to the Control Panel I find that it is completely void of everything except the scripts and menus in the Code tab. No tables, no forms, no browses, etc.

All the files are still on the server so no data was lost but I had to insert each table back into the Control Panel.

Has anyone had this happen before or have any ideas as to what happened?
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve.

    RE: Control panel empty

    Steve,

All the pieces that are blank or empty are stored in the various dictionaries supporting your data files. Is it possible someone deleted them, or restored them from a backup that was made when they were empty. If they were deleted, Alpha Five would create new ones when you add the tables back into the database.

Have your workstations been network optimized?

Now that I think about it, I did have this happen once before. I inadvertantly copied just the data tables and indices to a new folder, and then when I moved the ADB file there and tried to open the database, all my forms, report layouts, and code scripts, menus, toolbars ... they were all gone. Why? because I neglected to copy over the dictionary files.

        Steve,

We have a Novell network at work and I am familiar with NAL objects. However, I do not know exactly what you mean by launching an application by means of a NAL.

Normally, data is left on the server. Thus, an application never has to be launched. We use NAL objects to launch the runtime and associated shadow files to a new local station. In other words, the NAL does an install for us.

Are you doing something different. If so, what?

          Steve,

Another idea. Was a Database Compact interrupted? I've lost forms and report layouts when this happens.

Have you checked with your system administrator to make sure that you have full access rights to the data location on the server.

              RE: Control panel empty

I have not tried to "network optimize" the app for the following reasons:
Several users making entries at the same time with the main table using an auto-increment of the main indexed field. I'm afraid with several "shadow" files on the individual workstations that the table could become corrupt or the numbering out of sequence. But then again I have not really looked into the optimization very seriously. Any info on that would be helpful.
              Thanks,
              Steve.

                RE: Control panel empty

Right now all I'm doing is using the NAL to start the app from the NAL shell. Users are only allowed the run certian apps and are not allowed such things as explorer, run, control panel, etc.
So I use NAL to "run" the app with command line switches. The executable is on the workstation with the data on the server.

                  RE: Control panel empty

Well the thing is that nothing had been copied, moved, packed, etc. User was in the app then got out went back a few minutes later after another user had been in and the app would not load because all the tables were missing.
The users a very restricted on what they have access to so that somewhat prevents "accidental" deletions. Other than that I don't have a clue.

                  Thanks,
                  Steve.
