Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    re age from date of birth

    Under table sets, edit structure, I have among others, the following :

    Field: Type:

    Client_Dob Date

    Cl_Age Numeric

    Todays_Date Date

    On my form, I want to get the cl age to show an age in years.

    Do I need enter something in the edit structure section, or in the restructure table section, or later when Im building the form use the function button to enter it there?

    Ive read the bulletins in print age, but dont see where I need to imput the information or maybe Im not using the right calculation in the right place.

    I have tried to edit field rules by right clicking the table icon, then going to cl_age then typing in trim(str((date()-client_dob)/365.25)) under calculated field expression, but I get the error code: The equation must return a number. How stupid am I? What do I do to fix?
    can you straighten me out? Randy

    Randy,

    Most would probably not store a numeric age in the table in the first place. If you do so, the value will be incorrect as soon as enough time passes. Might become wrong the next day, or a year later.

    Most would calculate the current age when it's needed for some purpose. Like in a report.

    there have been numerous threads on this and related subjects. Search this forum, and check the code archive.

      Are you saying its not possible to keep clients age current as I look at the form daily as I review my clients? The form I made is showing basic info and it would be helpful.

        If you want to view the current age on a form, create a calculated field on the form, not in the table. The field in the table will only update when a change is made, whereas the field on the form calculates wherever the form is opened.

          RE: re age from date of birth

          Randy:

          Here is a simple function that calculates age:

          function PERSONS_AGE as N(BIRTHDATE as D)

          PERSONS_AGE = year(date())-year(BIRTHDATE)
          if addyears(BIRTHDATE,PERSONS_AGE) > date()
          PERSONS_AGE = PERSONS_AGE - 1
          end if

          end function
          end

          As jerry points out, after creating the function, it must be used in a calculated field to properly reflect the age. The calculated field must be at the form or report level, not within the table.

          The usage is as follows:

          varbirthday = ctod("05/30/1964")

          The_Age = persons_age(varbirthday)

          ?The_Age
          = 37.000000

          This function only calculates integers.

          There are a lot of other solutions to calculating age if you search this board. Alpha Five Version Five has a built in function that does this.

            you can draw your own methosd for this, but I wrote it any years ago in alpha 4 i thin and it goes
            date - dateofbirth (to get days old) / 365.25
            you need to make it an integer and floor it
