TRIM THE LAST CHARACTERS

I NEED A XBASIC COMMAND THAT WOULD TRIM A LAST CHARCTERS OF
A STRING. THE ACTUAL OR INITIAL LENGHT IS NOT FIXED/

FOR EXAMPLE: "WE ARE 12345PERSONSQ"

BY EXECUTING SOMTHING TO TRIM OFF THE LAST CHARACTER WHICH IS "Q" AND IF IT GET EXECUTED AGAIN, THIS TIME IT WILL TRIM AWAY LETTER "S", BECAUSE "S" IS NOW THE LAST CHARACTER

VERY SIMILAR TO "BACKSPACE" FUNCTION IN A TYPICAL KEYBOARD RUNNING A DOS PROMPT...

Ken, it's not necessary to SHOUT.

I don't think there's a single function that will do what you need, however two can be combined easily and accomplish what you are looking for.

len() returns the length of the string

left() returns a new string containing a specified number of characters, starting from the left-most character of a source string.

Here's an example I did using the interactive editor:

dim testvar as C
testvar = "abcdefghijkl"
testvar = left(testvar, len(testvar)-1)
?testvar
= "abcdefghijk"

As you can see, this combination trimmed off
the 'l'.

Just curious. What type of touchscreen application are you working on?

This application is for my Part person to dispense parts
over the counter to visiting Technicians who need parts and components to do their field service jobs/

These parts are typical PC related products and some need
instant recognition, thus scanning/picture/bar coding and "weight" scale come into action.

Acticipated about 30 realtime users, across Canada, all connected over the VPN and running from a Window2000 server in the head office. All applications are done with alpha 5, except the "auto e-mailer" and most of the "bar coded label" are done via a label server application.

I am running it on final Beta mode, still missing at least 10 features. And I am doing this alone, typical 1 hr a day in between my managing function.,

Thanks for the reply. We do a lot with touchscreens, but it is all in the Customer Loyalty market. Radio, horse tracks, movies theatres, etc. We do all of that in VB and our in house stuff with A5. I would like to create an A5 version and ver 5 would certainly handle it. Unfortunately, the VB guys are afraid of anything that looks as easy as Alpha.
