Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

RE: Data in memo field dissapearing

    Richard,

I fear it's going to be trial and error. See Jerry Brightbill's post earlier in this thread.

When you find the problem, let everyone know.

RE: Data in memo field dissapearing

I don't know if you ever got you memo field problem fixed. The same thing was happening to me on two of 30 computers at my office. They were both running Window's XP. I finnally figured out that if I placed my video hardware on the lowest accelleration setting it would fix the problem. My video accelleration settings alos had a box marked something like "Write enable" (I'm sure thats not exactly correct) and I had to disable that box too. Worked great after that.

Larry, wonder if you could post a description of the video display adapter here ? It might provide a clue to others who are having trouble and discover that they have the same card.

RE: Data in memo field dissapearing

This whole thread reminds me of similar video problem reports some time ago which were related to stack overflow and video acceleration settings. If you search for "hardware acceleration" (no quotes) there are a couple threads about related problems. Both Ira Perlow and Finian Lennon posted messages about slowing video acceleration which seems to effect many things other than video. The earlier problems were with certain video chips (S3 based primarily), but I wonder if the problem is coming up again with newer video cards for XP.

After much agravation, we went to Microsoft Terminal Server and get better performance and no errors. Terminal Server is part of XP proffesional and home editions along with 2000 professional. It will work at full color at far greater speeds than pcAnywhere. I use it on a 56K modem and it works fine. pcAnywhere is a great file handling program for sync. hardrives and comparing folders which we still do with it.

RE: Data in memo field dissapearing

                  Hi Sarah
                  No trouble !
As you can see, this problem dates back to Feb 2002.
I'm afraid we still have the problem today.
My only fix has been to crate a single form (part of a tabbed sub-form) and place a very large memo field object on it.
This way you can see most of what you have typed, and it saves OK.
So we still have the problem !
(anyone else out there too ????)
                  best regards
                  Bob

RE: Data in memo field dissapearing

Check out the message string just below this one titled "Memo Field not saving input". There have been many posts on memo fields and various articles on the best way to save and use memos. There are a couple known issues.

                    1. Saving the memo in the memo editor does not save the edit, it just transfers the data to the memo field. You have to save the form to commit the edit.

                    2. All field names should be 10 characters or less. Memo data is saved in the fpt file which is linked to the main table. If this link becomes corrupted, memo data is lost. If you use long field names, especially with a memo field, the long name information is saved in a data dictionary. If that becomes corrupted, the name information is lost and the link fails.

                    3. Always compact the database after making design changes (form layout edits, report changes, etc) Compacting is not required in normal data entry.

                    4. Reindex periodically.

                    5. Use memo fields only where absolutely required. Use long character fields (255 character) if possible.

                    6. Most developers put the memo fields in a linked table rather that the main table. If the memo information becomes corrupted, only the memo information is effected.

                    7. Backup, backup, backup. Corruption can occur. The best protection is a series of backups so you can roll back to known good data.

                    Jerry

RE: Data in memo field dissapearing

                        Thanks for the moral support!

This is now a 2 year old problem.
Way back, many helpful people here suggested that I zipped and sent files to them. I have not followed this up for the following reasons:
                        1.
The problem exists whether it is in my existing database, or in any simple database I create.
                        2.
I have 2 PCs which at the time (nearly 2 years back) were not connected by network.
I have installed Alpha on both, written A5 databases on both.
Sending files from the problem pc to the "OK" one, the problem disappears. ie. memo fields work fine on the "OK" pc.
Creating a new database on the good machine with working memos, if I send those files to the problem pc, then the memos disappear as they always have done.
Conclusion: It is not an inherantly Alpha problem. It must be something in the way PCs are originally configured (both were brand new from high street chain shops).

Incidentally, I discovered many months back that the problem goes away if you start XP in safe mode, so (and I'm no expert at all) I assume it must be a driver thing.
                        regards Bob

RE: Data in memo field dissapearing

I have been having the same issue with Win2000 Professional. Thinking it was a DirectX driver problem, because it worked in safe mode, I did all the updates including SP4.

But....it still had the disappearing text. However, I disabled the PopUp Stopper, and restarted Alpha Five, and it works.

Take note: The Popup Stopper must be shutdown *before* you start Alpha Five.

                            Thanks for that.
Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly is a popup stopper??
--- and how do I shut it dowm (I'm on Win XP by yhe way).
                            THanks in advance.

A pop up stopper is a prgram that blocks those annoying browser windows opening in your face as you browse the net. I have the freebie from panicware, and it works great. Interestingly I don't have much problem with Alpha Five while it's running. I am still using Win98

I don't have a pop up stopper, so I guess not relevant in my case.
