Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Wayne's script to Duplicate Set

    I have been trying to duplicate the script in Dr. Wayne's book to duplicate a set. I also copied the script from his web site, but to no avail.

    Here is the script. It crashes upon hitting the count_items with a message of "inexact match"

    If I substitute a number for this variable say 4, Alpha 5 crashes and I need to reboot.

    dim pte as p
    dim Rx as p
    dim old_parent as b
    dim count_Items as n
    dim i as n

    pte = table.current(1)
    Rx = table.current(2)
    count_Items = count(Meds->Medid,GRP->patients)

    IF count_items > 0 then
    dim records[count_items] as b 'count_items
    i = 0
    Rx.fetch_first()
    while i 0
    Old_parent = pte.record_data_get()
    pte.enter_begin()
    pte.record_data_set(old_parent)
    Pte.dc_care = {}
    Pte.soc = {}
    Pte.enter_end(.t.)
    if count_items>0 then
    for i = 1 to count_items
    Rx.enter_begin()
    Rx.record_data_set(records[i])
    Rx.ClientID = pte.pteid
    Rx.enter_end(.t.)
    Next
    End if
    Parent.resynch()
    END

    How do YOU duplicate a set?

    Thanks

    Tom

    RE: Wayne's script to Duplicate Set

    Tom,

    Which book?

    Which script?

    Pending further details from you I'd say the problem is in how you are using the count() function. Look for differences in what you're doing and what Dr. Wayne's script is doing. For example, is the context of your script the same as his? Might this be an issue with the alias name of your table (could be, if you're running from a form that's based on the tables involved in your script).

        Tom,

        thanks. I'll check it out when I get home. (Dr. Wayne's book is where my umbrella is! ... not where I need it!).

        This AM when I tried to find the script I did not see it listed in the table of contents script listing... maybe it's part of another routine? Anyway I'll check it out this evening. Let us know if you get it unscrambled.

          RE: Wayne's script to Duplicate Set

          Okay - I'm making a little progress - thanks to Dr. Wayne.

          here is my current script.

          ----------------
          dim pte as p
          dim Rx as p
          dim old_parent as b
          dim count_Items as n
          dim i as n

          pte = table.current(1)
          Rx = table.current(2)

          count_items=0
          rx.fetch_first()
          while .not. rx.fetch_eof()
          count_items=count_items+1
          rx.fetch_next()
          end while
          ' remove the next line after you are sure this works
          'ui_msg_box("count_items is now",str(count_items))
          debug(1)
          IF count_items > 0 then
          dim records[count_items] as b
          i = 0
          Rx.fetch_first()
          while i 0
          Old_parent = pte.record_data_get()
          pte.enter_begin()
          pte.record_data_set(old_parent)
          Pte.dc_care = {}
          Pte.soc = {}
          Pte.enter_end(.t.)
          if count_items>0 then
          for i = 1 to count_items
          Rx.enter_begin()
          Rx.record_data_set(records[i])
          Rx.ClientID = pte.pteid
          Rx.enter_end(.t.)
          Next
          End if
          Parent.resynch()
          END

          ---------

          So where it crashes - throws me out of Alpha - is the second time around filling variable RECORDS with a blob.

          Does Records need to be dimensioned? Would it also be a blob? Would Record[1] be distinct from record[2]?

          Suggestions welcome. I'll keep experimenting, but a little theory is helpful.

            Okay - I see where it is dim'ed

            Still crashing on this line:

            dim records[count_items] as b

            with the warning, "variable is of different type"

            Ideas?...

              Why don't you run the script with the debug on and watch the variable values in the watch window?

                Jay,

                That's what I've been doing. AND

                I FIGURED IT OUT!!

                Two changes made the difference:

                1. dim records in the biginning without the []
                2. eliminate the END statement before the first End If

                YES!!

                Thank You

                  RE: Wayne's script to Duplicate Set

                  Just to complete this thread for the next person searching to duplicate a set.

                  The above code DOES NOT WORK, the next morning.

                  But Dr. Wayne emailed me code that does work, and you'll love it in the morning.

                  Here it is... or should I keep you hanging... okay here it is.

                  'Dup Set by Dr. Wayne ---------------------------
                  dim pte as p
                  dim Rx as p

                  dim rx2 as p
                  dim old_parent as b
                  dim count_Items as n

                  pte = table.current(1)
                  Rx = table.current(2)
                  rx2=table.open("meds",file_rw_shared)
                  pte2=table.open("patients",file_rw_shared)
                  query.filter="clientid='"+pte.pteid+"'"
                  query.order=""
                  query.options=""
                  ix=rx2.query_create()
                  count_items=ix.records_get()
                  pte2.fetch_goto(pte.recno())
                  Old_parent = pte2.record_data_get()
