Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help With Filter Expression

I have a situation where I need to filter the products based on license type. For instance, Let's say there are 3 license types, Lic1, Lic2 & Lic3. The product id for the products begin with either L1, L2 or L3. All customers will hold 1 or more licenses and I want the customer to only view those products which correspond to the license type, Lic1, Lic2 or Lic3.

If a customer has Lic1 type, he only can view those products which begin with L1. If a customer has Lic1 and Lic 2, then he views only the products that begin with L1 and L2, I think you get the picture.

What are your thoughts on how to choose the lic types. I could use check boxes but then the user can't add or edit the license values. If there is a lookup, this will allow for the editing and adding of the licens types but then I'd have to include all possible combinations of license types. That will look a bit tacky.

How would I write an expression so that a customer can only view and choose those products which pertain to his license type/s?

Thanks much for the suggestions and advice,

    kenn

    Ken,

I guess it depends by what mechanism you want your customers to see their products.

    e.g.

Using a filtered table lookup, the filter expression might be something like...

    For the Product_ID field:

    substr(ID,1,2) = Var->Cust_Lic_Type

where Var->Cust_Lic_Type is a shared var

      Building on Peter's comments:

You could have multiple variables, one for each type and present them as Checkboxes to the user.

      then:

      For the Product_ID field:

      substr(ID,1,2) = Var->Cust_Lic_Type .or. substr(ID,1,2) = Var->Cust_Lic_Type2 .or. substr(ID,1,2) = Var->Cust_Lic_Type3...

        Tom,

I like Peter's suggestion better because the user can edit/add license types whereas that can't he done with check boxes. Whatcha think?

        cool tom?

          RE: Help With Filter Expression

          Hi Ken,

I am curious, does a customer have to attain Lic1 before he qualifies
to advance to Lic2 and obviously the same thing for Lic3. If that is
the case, it's a whole new ball of wax.

Given the above to be true, then:
          select
          case Lic3=.T.
          code here

          case Lic2=.T.
          code here

          case lic1
          code here

          end select

          efs

            efs,

No, the customer can posess any or all licenses.

            Thanks,

              Ken,

Guess I thought there was only three license types. How many license types are there?

Tom - now too cool; BRrrrr.

                Too Cool Tom,

Only 3 license types but a customer may have any or all licenses, thus there are several combinations.
