Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: the REAL V5 prices

Boy, can I relate to what you said. However, I have been in business for 35 years and operate a very modest small business enterprise. I have used Alpha software since the start just to keep my business up to date. I don't develop, I don't have a customer base paying me for programs or upgrades. I just try to keep up to date with the latest version of the software. When V4.5 came up, I didn't mind spending the $300 to upgrade from V4.0. I didn't notice a difference in the operation but had confidence that the developers had made some significant changes that would benefit me. I also intended to upgrade to V5.0 when that came out and I didn't mind paying a modest price to keep up to date with the latest version. The $1099 price caught me by surprise, however, and I can't see how my small company can afford the extra $800 to upgrade from V4.5 to V5.0. I don't intend to change my program much and only wanted to stay with the latest program. I really feel like I have already paid for my program each time I upgraded and for $800 just to keep using the same basic program I have set up since the early DOS days with Alpha, I just simply can't afford it.

I guess my company will now start falling behind and I won't be able to upgrade my operating program unless I can somehow justify the extra expense.

I have gone the route of Access and DBase and others. Alpha, by far, is the best thing for me. BUT, simply to upgrade my program and not being a developer, just because I use 4 work stations in my business, I have to bare the brunt of the developer's costs! I certainly would be happy to pay the price of a single upgrade but the cost to me just because I chose to network my application with a 5 pack license is simply out of reach.

As we will only need to buy one copy of the full version as a developement tool the cost of $299 I beleive is fair. Less the cost of the upgrade to 4.5. The new version what ever it is going to be called, looks good and works well, just what we wouild expect from Alpha. My problem and I get the feeling from this board that the sting in the tail is the cost of Runtimes Licenses.

No, not for me, that isn't the rub. For me (who does not develop, it's the cost of the 5 user pack to keep operating my own business. I agree the single user price is fair. It's the 5 user pack that is priced out of reach for an upgrade. I already paid that kind of price to get the first 5 user pack. Why is the upgrade to expensive?

I've never seen anyone do a better job in breaking down the Alpha user base into segments. You should be in the Alpha marketing department.

I started out in level 1 and am now in Level 3 (I developed and use an application in my business. I own A5V4 and the runtime.)

I did experience some "sticker shock" when I saw the new prices. It's not that I did not expect the prices to be higher--I just thought that they would be in the same ball park as competitive products -- Access and Filemaker. Instead, they are considerably higher.

I am taking a wait and see attitude on upgrade. At lower prices, I might have upgraded right away. But at these prices, I am going to wait and see the marketing effort, trade journal reviews etc. With this price structure, the product seems to be aimed at professional developers and not the "Average Joe" who self-developes for his own use.

I'm not "whinning" about the prices. Alpha Software has every right to set their prices to maximize their revenue. They need to do what is in their best interest. I would do the same thing.

One nice thing about the free enterprise system--prices are ultimately set by the marketplace. The REAL V5 PRICE will be determined by consumers in the marketplace.

I made the jump last nignt and the program is as just as the beta testers said, .... mind-boggling. All and all I found my applications worked real well with the new program but maybe the way I did things before were are not conventional and I did find a few gremlins to work out. V5 is not just and upgrade it is dramatically better, yet still has the flavor and mindset of its predecessor. While one may not be able to work or even know about all the bells and whistles, overall you can work it comfortably with little reading. It sounds like a 30-day trail might be coming up for the skeptics. Everyone should definitely give it a try.

                      Hi Jim,
I agree with your statement about being under the impression I was paying for version 5.0 when I paid for the version 4.5. I feel that I paid a lot of money for v4.5 and the unlimited runtime when the talk about v5 was that it was right around the corner. And under no circumstances were there any hints that the cost of the v5 upgrade would be more than double the cost of the full version of v4.5. I guess we just "assumed" that the upgrade cost would gravitate in this solar system.

Jim, I'ma bit confused about what you said:

agree the single user price is fair. It's the 5 user pack that is priced out of reach for an upgrade.

If you don't mind spending $299 for one license, why is $1099 for 5, which is $219.80 each, objectionable?

Also, you might want to look at the runtime. At $699 you would be able to have up to 10 users. These users would be limited to running your application only, not building new applications, but it sounds like this would do what you need.

And finally, you have the option of continuing to use V4.5. From this post as well as your others, it sounds like you don't plan to do any new development so don't really need a new version anyway.

Just a small point--the upgrade price for a 10 user runtime listed above is $799.00 -- was this correct?

                          You said $699.00 .

I feel that using one copy of a program and using it in one business even though I have 4 work stations is really using one copy of the program. And $299 is a fair price for an upgrade to a program I have already bought a 5 user license for. Why should I buy the license all over again. All I want is an upgrade. Why do I need to purchase a 5 user license each time? I am not selling this program. If I don't upgrade, then I start getting behind all the time and that isn't good. Remember Alpha 5 version 1, what if I had stayed with that?

                                RE: the REAL V5 prices

If you want to use Word, Access or any other software on 5 workstations, you need to purchase 5 licenses. This is a standard within the software industry and Alpha is not creating new business practices here. So you need to purchase a 5 user license each time because you have 5 users.

If it were not done this way, we would have to charge much more than $299 per copy to cover our costs. That would be very unfair to the people that only use one or two copies because they would be paying a higher license fee to subsidize the users that user 25 copies.
