Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Network Optimizing causes problems

    Hi,

    I am trying to clean an applicaton.
    When first designed a part of the application (STOCK) was in a seperate folder.
    The main application is called LVA the stock application is called STOCK.

    The LVA application has several forms and some of them are based on the STOCK tables.

    I have copied all the files from the STOCK folder into LVA folder, and I renamed the original STOCK folder BU_STOCK to make sure LVA will not use it.

    At that time there were many table "Not Available" because BU_STOCK is not recognized.
    I add the not available tables that are in LVA.

    If I open the LVA from my station using RunTime or Full Version, it works fine, forms can be opened with the buttons.

    But if I Network Optimize the LVA application then some forms are not available anymore when clicking the buttons. Application seems to be looking for the STOCK file that has been changed to BU_STOCK.

    I have removed the original shadow file and reopened it directly from the server from my station, but as soon as I network optimize I get the problem.

    Why is the application working before optimizing and not after. I am doing something wrong for sure.

    Anyone can help please ?

    Thanks

    JP

    Jean,

    Did you hard code any of the table directory references into these forms? If you did, when the form opens it won't be able to find the now relocated tables.

      JP,

      Sounds like some of your tables are still not present in the same folder as your database on the server.

      Then, once that's been confirmed, you'll have to check your scripts to release or revise any that still refer to the old path to the tables you moved. This will affect all your saved operations, including saved queries. It may also affect field rules that pulled information from or posted information to those same tables.

      The potentially huge amount of work involved in searching all these possible scenarios is the primary reason I have decided never... and I mean never ever... to put tables in more any folder other than the ADB folder.

        RE: Network Optimizing causes problems

        Hi JP:

        If you are pretty sure that you do not have hard-coded paths and all the tables are now where they should be in a single folder, try this.

        From the client machine:
        -delete the shadow folder;
        -open up the application directly on the server;
        -compact the server copy;
        -optimize to the client shadow folder.

        The rationale behind this is that sometimes when I have edited my application at home and copied it to the server it has helped to compact the new server copy on the server. I assume that there are sometimes internal pointers which reference my C drive which conflict with the new location. I may be all wet here but my advice will only take 5 minutes of your time to try.

          Thanks to all,

          Yes I have hard coded paths, and that is probably the problem.

          Over the years I have learned not to spread the tables over, but this is the first application I designed and i have been adding a lot to it. Now I am facing a huge work to correct my mistakes.

          I have hard coded paths with some posting rules and I will search for them.

          Thanks again for your prompt answers, I knew I could rely on this board.

          Regards to all

            JP,

            If you have the A5 documentor, document the whole app and then you can run a text search on your code.

              Jean,

              Before I had any documentor for Alpha, I'd open up the application files with anything that could view a binary file. Then I'd use it to search for old drive references to see if any more were present.

              You may also want to use Alpha's internal data path command so the code can find the tables whereever they happen to be placed.
