Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    2 problems with printing forms

I have 2 problems when printing my invoice.

In my "ship to" area, it prints everything out okay. I also have a "sold to" area. 99% of the time it is the same and it is just blank. It still puts in the "," which I have between the "city" and "state" fields. How can I tell it not to print the "," if those fields are empty?

Also, on my invoice form, if I have more than 10 items, it does not print out my subtotals, shipping, tax, total fields. I cannot figure this out. Everything prints out okay if I have less than 10 or so items.

Any ideas to help me would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

By the way, I am using A5, v4

RE: 2 problems with printing forms

    For the first part:

define a calculated field for the "report".

"cands" defined as rtrim(cityfieldname)+", "+rtrim(statefieldname) - use your real field names,

and place this calculated field on the invoice instead of the fields themselves separated by a comma. Now edit the properties of the calculated field on the invoice and define a color equation:

    if(isblank("cityfieldname").or.isblank("statefieldname"),"White on White","Black on White")
    There can be only one.

      Carol,

You say you're trying to print your invoice forms.

Are you trying to print the data entry form for your invoices, or are you trying to print a report?

If it's the former you may be bumping up against a limitation of Alpha Five. It's ability to print data entry forms is rudimentary. Useful mainly during development but runs out of gas on complex forms. If this is your case, I suggest you design a report layout and use it to print your invoices.

        Tom --

It's a report layout that I am trying to print. The report takes the info from the data I enter into my invoice form.

It prints all the invoice items, but will not print the subtotal, shipping/handling, etc.

It prints okay if I have less than 10 or so items, but I just had an order and had over 10 items and it would not print the subtotal, etc.

        Confuses me.

        Thanks.

          Carol,

          Thanks for clarifying.

The number of items in the invoice detail section of the report may force part of the report to a second page. If you only printed one page perhaps that explains 'where the subtotals went'.

Please describe where the subtotals appear in your report layout. It's possible that they may be in a group footer, a page footer, or a report footer. Where did you put them?

Did any of the text in that same region (group footer, page footer, report footer) print out ok?

            Carol,

            Yet another idea.

If the report printed fine but the subtotal amount failed to appear correctly, perhaps the subtotal amount requires more characters to be display than the present format width and properties of your field permit.

If you have the field formatted to display 6 characters,
999.99 is the largest number you can print

If your subtotal was 1000.00 then the subtotal amount would not display.

            Could this be the issue?

              Tom --

              I have:

header: sold to, ship to, etc.

              detail: product id, description, etc.

              footer: subtotal, shipping, etc.

page footer: thank you paragraph, etc.

Everything prints okay but it does not print the footer. There should be enough room on the page to print the footer.

                Tom --

Oh, my goodness! I just actually printed it out (before I just previewed it). It does print the info I thought was missing on a second page!

Sorry -- I should have actually printed it before I posted.

Thanks for your help -- and again, sorry for my stupid mistake.

No problem. Glad you got it sorted.
