Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

form events, how to write scripts

    Hi folks,
Im sure I am missing something simple, Im trying to use the OnActivate form event to maximise a form. I cant get the script correct. I have tried using help and "Xbasic for everyone, page 56, but the example does not help much.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Brian Dennis.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

      Ken,
Thanks for the response. Did you mean " maximise.this() " or " maximise.this()

The first I get trapped error, maximise not found. The second I get a different of error box say "expected value"

      Thanks for the help,
      Brian

RE: form events, how to write scripts

        Brian,

        Try:

        this.maximize()

in the OnInit event script and in the OnActivate event script for your form.

        Ken's

maximize.this() is usually reserved for use in heavy traffic on the freeway, and is often followed by "you turkey!" and occasionally is accompanied by a hand gesture of sorts.

I suggest you shut down and reboot.

If you still have a problem, post a working model here, and maybe we can figure it out for you.

              Dennis,

Try this on the OnActivate event.

              parentform.maximize()

                  Jerry,
I get error message, "parentform not found". I have looked in the the xbasic book on-line, no info on this, that I can see.
                  Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help, I have rebooted some times, no change.
How would I post a working model here ?

Zip your entire database into a single compressed file, and attach it to a message posted here. There's a 1MB filesize limit, so you may have to pare things down a bit. Include a textfile or other instructions to tell us where to look to see the problem. If a particular sequence generates the error, tell us how, assuming we know nothing whatsoever about your application.

                        Brian,

If you want to see a working example download Basic Data Entry (Revised) from the Code Archive. Examine the events in the Main Menu form. You'll find this.maximize() used in both the Init and OnActivate events for that form.

                          Tom,
That finally did it for me, and it works ok. If I were to do that with all forms would it slow things down much ?

                          Thanks again,

                            Brian,

Both parentform.maximize() and this.maximize() should work. In fact, I have tried both on a test form and they work as expected. Tom is correct. Post a working model and someone can see what is happening.
