Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Object fill property

Can't get A5 to change the color of a button for me.

Have a "CANCEL" button setup to clear a data entry form.
Works ok (finally). Now I would like the script for the
"CANCEL" operation to change the fill color of another
button, (to indicate that the button is "activated", and to indicate that the user does not have to click the button, but instead just press enter to make it run it's script).

    Here is my code:
    :Pamsscreenadd:Button1.fill="Yellow"
    :Pamsscreenadd:Button1.activate()
    :Pamsscreenadd:Button1.Refresh()

Problem: the button is activated, but A5 refuses to provide the Yellow fill.

An advance thank you to anyone who can assist with this problem.

    Barry,

You are using the wrong object property. A5 is sometimes a little confusing about how to reference properties. Try this:

    :Pamsscreenadd:Button1.fill.forecolor = "Yellow"

      RE: Object fill property

      Barry,

One good way to check your commands for objects is the following. Start up the form with the button on it. Next go into one of the coding areas and bring up the interactive area and the object explorer. Look for your session, probably Session1 in the object explorer and find the form and button you want to work with. You will be able to see all the objects pertaining to the button and should be able to change their colors on the open screen from the interactive area.
The Interactive Area is context free, so you will need to give the long absolute object path to the button for these commands to work. I did a similar thing months ago and it took some trial and error to get everything correct. I managed to flash the screen alternating colors to alert users with no sound to an error condition!

Thank you Jerry, that was exactly the ticket. If only A5 had some good documentation to go with it, I believe many
of these kinds of problems would not be appearing on this
        forum.

Been there and done that David, but A5 did not mention the
"forecolor", it just returned fill = "Yellow".

Just another example of the very poorest documentation I have ever encounterd.

            Barry,

Actually, David is correct on the best way to find the available properties of an object. If you check the section in the xbasic manual on "Using the Xbasic Explorer to View Object Properties", you will find an explanation on how to use the interactive page of xbasic explorer to test all of the object properties available and get the proper syntax to reference each property. The number of properties for each object is surprising. To list every property in documentation would take many pages, pages that most people would not want to wade through to get the information they want. At least Alpha gives a relatively simple way get find the information from within the program. Some programs hide information behind cryptic explanations and in obscure help files.

I would sure love to see the documentation in windows help format rather than word/adobe. It seems word and adobe bog my machine down so much that it is about impossible to spend much time in the help while A5 is open.

                Barry,

It's no secret that A5's documentation is not all that great. This has been discussed quite exhaustively. Your can do a search and find probably a couple of hours worth of posts on this subject. (Ahhh, bed time reading)

Alpha asked for document suggestions quite some time ago and they are WELL aware of the situation. I have seen some of the documentation for v5 and it's much improved.

Don't let the lack of documentation frustrate you or you'll become distracted from your main goal and you'll go down in a whirl of grrrrrrr.

Thanks Ken, good to know that are aware, and addressing the issue for next release.

I'll try to curtail negative remarks from here on.

                  Again thanks, I needed that.
