Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    if anyone wants to try making an embedded browse resynch i would greatly appreciate it - I have tried everything I have read about and could think of. There is a read me text file -

    RE: refreshing an embedded browse

    oops! here's the text

    on the first menu click "contracts"
    the displayed client should be "Martin Cole"
    on the contracts screen click "calculate payments"
    answer yes to the next 2 warnings
    at the dialog screen enter a down payment of "33.33" -the value now is 25.00
    enter months of 12
    push "calculate payments"
    push "accept and transfer data to client"
    then when you go back to the "contracts screen" notice that the browse under payments is still as before

    how can I get it to refresh to the new values automatically?
    most of the code is under the "calculate payments" button, so that is where the code to resynch the child table payments in browse3 would be.

      Martin:
      You might try putting this code on the on activate and on fetch events for the contracts form.

      tabbed1.refresh()

        RE: refreshing an embedded browse

        First I remmed out the "'tabbed1.tab_set(5)" since they prevented entry into the forms. Then I added

        Browse3.refresh()

        after p.commit() and then I added

        p.resynch() after that.

        Worked fine.

        I don't reccommend using numeric linking fields, however.

          I forgot. I also remmed out this code on the
          "View Data - Enter Payments" button.
          It's a one to many link, why do you need it, anyway?

          ''var->cnum=parentform:contractid.value
          ''tbl=table.get("payments")
          ''if tbl.contractid cnum
          '' ui_msg_box("Error","Payments have not been set up yet!",16)
          '' end
          ''end if

            Steve, the reason I use that is it is a way to be sure there is a child in the table for that client - if there a are no records in that child, is there a better way?

            i remmed out all the tabbed5.tab_set's
            i added

            p:complete.value=.t.
            cond2.refresh()
            p.commit()
            browse3.refresh() '*******
            p.resynch() '********
            doesn't work for me. there is a record in the browse - but it is the wrong record.

            why do you recommend not using numerics for linking fields - that's all I've ever used.

              Martin,
              Numeric values tend to be more complicated to work with when they require concatenation with other field values. You can also get strange values from null fields (although a key field should never be blank) when the field type is numeric. There can also be other minor nuisances with numeric keys and as a result, strings are generally preferred.

              As to the posting routine, I note that your set includes all the tables being written to and yet your code opens new instances of the tables in all cases (e.g. "Payments = table.current(3) and "Customers = table.current(4). Why don't you just establish a pointer to these tables and write to the fields. To test for child records in the payments tables just use the fetch_first() method and evaluate the result.

              Certain variables (like cnum) should be established as form level variables (layout) so they will persists through the various routines.
              Cnum should probably be set at the OnFetch event for the form as well as any other key linking values.

              Lastly, remember Peter Wayne's recommendations which I heartily agree with.....Simplify.

                RE: refreshing an embedded browse

                steve, thank's ever so much for your time and thoughts

                1. because browse3(payments) is filtered on the form to only show payments where payments.paid=.t., without opening a 2nd instance of the table, I can't figure out how to get a correct count of all the records.

                2. I tried about 12 different times to enter the records from the contracts form, but can't get past "error - enter already began" type messages.

                but here is another approach I tried, that does not open a 2nd instance of the payments table

                I enter the records from the dialog form:
                response=ui_msg_box("Caution", "Your are about to write these payments to your client's file - are you sure? ",20)
                if response=6
                ans="yes"
                amor=table.open("amortemp1")
                amor.index_primary_put("writenew")
                amor.fetch_first()
                while .not. amor.fetch_eof()
                :contracts:tables:payments.enter_begin()
                :contracts:tables:payments.record_clone(amor)
                :contracts:tables:payments.custid=var->custn
                :contracts:tables:payments.enter_end(.t.)
                amor.fetch_next()
                end while
                amor.close()
                else
                ans="no"
                end if
                parentform.close()
                end

                then, at the contracts form, after I close the dialog, if I put the following, the browse is successfully updated:

                f=form.view("amortizenew","dialog")
                f.close()
                parentform.fetch_last()
                parentform.fetch_first()
                parentform.resynch()
                parentform.index_set("contracid")
                parentform.find(cnum)
                parentform.resynch()
                browse3.resynch()
                browse3.refresh()
                browse3.fetch_first()
                end

                one reason I don't like this, though, is that it causes screen flicker - but it does work!

                Another approach, which I always end up using, is to just open another form, not as a dialog, close the parentform, and then come back to it and the client, and the child tables are always uptodate.

                here's the code I tried:
