Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5V4.5 and XP system restore

My version of XP home has decided to act up and has frequently required a "system restore" to a previous settings point in order to get bast the blue screen of death. (so much for being stable!)

The problem is that the restore wipes out any form, field rule, or other data dictionary changes made back to that point. (believe me, I've had many chances to check it!)

Is A5V5 able to get around this problem? If so, how can I get the beta version?

RE: A5V4.5 and XP system restore

Pat, I've been running 4.5 on both XP Home and XP Pro since maybe October with no problems, other than some of Alphas menu/toolbar icons don't display propwerly. I would think there is some other issue. Did you upgrade or buy a new system.

RE: A5V4.5 and XP system restore

      Martin,
I would love to solve the XP problem, but my feeling is that it may happen again in the future. Since it hasn't happened to you, you haven't seen the problem.

My real point is that when XP performs the system restore (which is a built in function) it messes up the A5 data dictionaries. There is no data lost; the dbf's are fine, but changes such as new forms created or new field rules are lost, and once when I had restructured a table, the field names were scrambled. If I do a database compact, that makes things worse.

My work-around for now is to set a new system restore point after every change to a form or field rule, I never database compact, and when XP dies I do a repair using the installation CD instead of a system restore. But, I'm wondering if this is one of the issues that has delayed the release of V5, and if it is fixed in the V5 beta, how can I get a copy?

        Pat,

I doubt your problem has anything to do with A5V5. If you were running any other version and had your data dictionaries replaced with older copies, you would have the same problems.

Since XP is determined to screw up you work, a good solution would be to periodically zip up a complete copy of the whole directory, or at least all of the data dictionaries (alb, alm, alx, ddd, ddm, ddx). Then you could restore these after XP has its fun. I would stongly suggest you do use compact periodically. Otherwise the data dictionaries get bloated with old copies of forms, browses, etc which is inviting problems.

As for why XP is crashing, someone else may be able to help. So far, I have avoided using XP.

I could be wrong here as I don't use XP but it seems to me that XP shouldn't be doing anything with the data dictionaries from alpha. I don't think there is anything in the registry having to do with alpha data dictionaries and other than that it shouldn't touch the alpha directories or your data directories. Am I missing something here?

If you are doing a restore as in a restore from backkup then this is different. You need to back up more frequently, perhaps to a CD. backing up with a decent backup program to a cd doing a differential on your alpha work only takes a few seconds and is worth doing often.
