Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Query Operation - Form View

    I defined a query operation that runs from a button on a form. When the query is run, the results are shown in a browse. I need the results to be shown in the form from which the query is run. I declared this form as the companion form but the browse still appears when the query is run.

    When this form is in use, there are up to 6 queries on 6 buttons, one on each button) that the user could choose from as means to view only certain records.

    I tried another approach: The form is built on a set of 2 tables and I put a filter on the child table. This approach would require copying the form (5 times) and placing a different filter on each form as well as plaacing 6 buttons on the main menu. However, the filter has no effect on my trial form.

    This may be a very elementary question, but, how does one qet the query results to show in the form rather than the browse w/o wirting xbasic on the button? I suppose the xbasic could also activate or show the form but then wouldn't there be 2 instances fo the same form open aat the same time?

    Additionally, How does one get the filter on the form to work?

    Thanks for the suggestions.

    I think you need two things.

    First try the run_silent option when your button calls the query as in

    :Query.run_silent("yourqueryname")

    then make sure the form gets repainted with

    parentform.refresh()

    then end the button script.
    There can be only one.

      Ken,

      what many folks do is to activate the script recorder, low level recording, run the saved query operation and then copy the recorded script produced by Alpha Five, and then use it as the foundation for a new script run from a button on your form. Only a small amount of customizing is needed in order to be able to run the same query from the form, instead of as a saved query operation. Most of the changes revolve around this distinction:

      1) the saved query operation opens a new instance of the table, before running the query, so you'll see code in the script opening the table.

      2) since the form has already opened the table, the script should be modified to refer to the current table, instead of opening a new instance.

      I find these things work better if my form does not contain (embedded in the properties of the form) filtering or ordering expressions.

          This is my code thus far:

          tbl = table.current()
          query.description = "Senior Qry"
          query.order = ""
          query.filter = "SESSION_INFO->YEAR=VAR->ASKC_WHAT_YEAR__.AND.(FLATTENQUERY(SESSION_INFO->SESSION="senior"))"
          query.options = "I"
          tbl.query_create()
          parentform.refresh()
          end

          When I clcik the ole button, the error message, "Object does not support requested interface referring to the last line of code. Makes no difference if I change it to registration2.refresh()

          Then if I exit the table and re-enter, the query is in effect. So, I'm close but need to get the parentform line to work.

          thanks,

            OK,

            I got it figured out. I changed parentform.refresh() to parentform.resynch() Works great!!

            The more I learn, the more I realize I need to learn and just how far I am from the level of Tom, Stan and so many others.

            Thanks for the help.

              Oh yeah, well I'm the dummy who suggested

              parentform.refresh()

              I may never get refresh() and resynch() straight.

                Stan,

                Maybe this will help ...

                'Refresh()' - to take a single object on the form and lead it gently to a quiet corner of a verdant glen, where, amidst the calm, cool breezes and the gentle sounds of a beautiful spring morning, it's value is adjusted (ever so slightly) to match the actual current value in the underlying table or variable.

                'Resynch()' - to grab a misbehaving form by the horns and wrestle it into a chute where each and every object on it is bulldogged, tied down, and locked up, so that each and every object on the form be updated to match the corresponding values in the underlying table or variables.

                    Stan,

                    Haaaad you not suggested the refresh, I would have beena t it a bit longer. So, grasshopper, thank you!

                    Tom,

                    If I didn't know better, I'd say you were in the sun too long at the beach or some of the tatoos on the young ladies bodies really imitated their bathing suits, hoiwever much that was.

                    Anyhow, if I see a hippopotamus coming, I'm heading up wind, real quick.
