Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    multi-user-info file

Had to get a new computer. Have a peer to peer network situation here. Each computer has a separate license # cd. However, we cannot open the files on computer 2 (client) because of "multi-user-info file" error message. What is going on here? I have uninstalled and installed several times with no success. Have gone into "regedit" and modified the license # to be different or the same still with no success. Thanks for any advice I can get on this matter.

    Shirley,

For clarity, "Each computer has a separate license # cd.", I presume you're talking about Alpha? You bought 2 separate A5 cd's. Can you tell us more about how you set it up other than simple installeed separate instances of A5?

    How are you linking, etc.?

      RE: multi-user-info file

I think you need to Network Optimize on one machine. Otherwise the two Alpha Programs are fighting over files.

Designate one machine as the "Server" - on this machine you operate Alpha normally.

On the other machine "Client", open Alpha locally the open the database on the "Server". Now under "File", select "Network Optimize" and the path should be a shadow path on the local computer "client".

Now both machines should be able to open the database - I think.

        RE: multi-user-info file

The two computers are connected by cable (no hub)and the server simply shares the files that are to be used on the client computer with full access share level. I'm thinking the Network Optimize plan will not work because now(or prior to the new computer) both the computers could make changes in the structure and field rules and have them permanent without having to save to to local copy, etc. In the past we have always been able to work on the same database without error messages (just not the same parcel). There are other errors with the new computer also. We have to use NetBeui in order for the Network to recognize each other. Still have been unable to get the internet connection to operate (our server tells us it must use the TCP/IP). I have already formated the new computer once since I suspect that Gateway loaded Win98 over XP. I would like to load Win2000 but have been unable to determine that an old FoxPro Dos based program that we must use for the State Dept. Of Rev. will operate under Win2000. I think Win2000 would solve a lot of the networking problems. About every other day we have to restore the network because the computers don't recognize each other. I call it a mess--perhaps some of you think of it as a challenge! Never have had these problems in the past.

          Shirley,
We have a somewhat larger network, but we use multiple protocols on the same network card with no problem. A hub is a fairly small investment (
