Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Massive corruption - Oh no!!

An app on my client's computer went bonkers. My client states, "It was working fine until we went to print the labels. On the preview it only showed the name, no address whatsoever. When we went back to the enter a new record or edit the form, it does not draw the whole screen, then it give you an error and shuts the program down."

I don't know if the indexes became corrupted or what they were doing before it went 5150 (crazy). I will be speaking to him later in the evening but thought I'd check to see if anyone has experienced anything like this.

    Thanks,

    Ken,

If you cannot replicate the problem on your computer, you might have your client zip up the files and email them to you for review and repair.

    Good Luck

I spoke to my client late last night and who knows what happened? They did put in a new printer port and did some other stuff but don't know what all was done.

After hooking up the printer, they tried to print labels and only the name field would print. He copied the label design and then it printed OK. Then he then tried to load a form for data entry and it would only load part way. Soon A5 burped and closed down.

I sent him an updated version which was due the next day anyhow and he is going to zip the corrupted app and send it to me so I can take a look at it. Ought to be interesting.

Ken, assuming that the app runs properly on your computer, and given that they modified their computer, it sounds like it could be a problem with conflicting resources in memory. One thing to check it to have them reboot the computer, and then press CTRL-ALT-DEL to see what's running. If there's a lot in there, this is the first place to start troubleshooting. Have them shut down everything except Explorer. Check system resources (should be above 90%). Then try your program. If it still pukes, have them take everything out of Start-up, reboot, and try again. If it still pukes, ask them if they have checked for viruses.

If all else fails, a 10-pound sledge hammer works great!!

                Wanda,

Yes, I've threatened to introduce things to "Big Eddie" before and I won't hesitate again. Later today, I'll send you my machine gun, flame thrower, hammer, chain saw and other neat tools to get this job done. You'll enjoy them and if you really want to be nice (not say ya have to, mind you), you might let your IT take their choice. (got this handy little collection from Tom Patten)
