Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: Duplicating databases

    Claudia,

Sometimes database procedues get changed in expanding the capabilities of the product, thus the new style and method of the duplicate command. You can surely work around this.

Allow me to speak off the cuff here since I don't have a copy of version 4.5 present.
Try copying the table which should leave you with both the data dictionary and data intact. You can then Zap the table to remove the data and have a clean import process including field names. Some sort of work around like this should be possible.

      RE: Duplicating databases

The duplication procedure in 4.5 is the same as it was in 3 unless you are talking about something different and I am just misunderstanding.

In 4.5 I have tried to "zap" the database and then import the ascii file directly into it. I always get the message "invalid # of fields." When I used to work in version 3 and tried to import the ascii files to get the updated databases, I got the same error message then too. Unless I am misinterpretting the message, I took it to mean the import file had a different number of fields than the receiving database. However, I know for a fact they both have the same number of fields. Then I discovered the duplication process.

I still have to work on what Peter Wayne suggested.

        RE: Duplicating databases

I thought your name looked familiar, and after I replied to you I realized you are THE Peter Wayne. I have curled up with your 2 instruction books quite a few nights, which I purchased when I ordered 4.5, trying to learn more about A5 (scripting?) and improve on what I have learned on the fly. I know--I need to get a life! Seriously, they are great, though, for an inexpert user like me.

With regard to your suggestion, using Windows Explorer to solve my problem, to follow is what I start out with and end up with:
Table A--with old records that need to be updated with new ascii information:
        cdx
        dbase Table
        DDD
        DDM
        DDX
        A5 database
        ALB
        ALM
        ALX
        MUF (what is that?)

When I import the ascii file into new file named C, I have the following new ones added:
        C--dbase Table
        C--DDD
        C--DDM
        C--DDX

When I duplicate A into B, these are added:
        B--CDX
        B--dbase Table
        B--DDD
        B--DDM
        B--DDX

When I duplicate C to B, I have following total files listed
        A--CDX
        A--dbase Table
        A--DDD
        A--DDM
        A--DDX
        A--A5 Database
        A--ALB
        ALM
        ALX
        MUF

        B--dbase Table
        B--DDD
        B--DDM
        B--DDX

        C--dbase Table
        C--DDD
        C--DDM
        C--DDX

In Windows Explorer, after I import the ascii file, you are saying I should copy (rename?) the dbf file from C into B rather than doing the duplication operation of C's records into B?

          RE: Duplicating databases

          Claudia,

The MUF file is the MultiUser File indicating the count of users, probably one in your case.

The three AL? files contain the list of items for the database, all the tables, startup settings, and global operations.

The three DD? files contain your database dictionary. If they are of a certain minimum length in Bytes, there are no added dictionary functions within them. Once you have added some data dictionary functions like field rules and other table related items, these become larger files. Importing data creates a new table with zero data dictionary functions.
Ask windows explorer for a detailed look at your files and you can see which data dictionary files have something in them by their larger size.

            Claudia,

If you will be coming to the conference, bring your database on a CD. We will no doubt have a time or two for the "pros" to take a look at it. That's a great benefit for attending the conference. Where else can one get that kind of tech support???
