Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    lookups in tables and forms

I created a simple lookup field in 'Tables' and defined the choices in 'edit field rules'. I expected to see all this in form view. The form view did not reflect any lookup choice and defaulted to a number. In Form design I deleted the field and created a new lookup using the lookup button on the palette tool, which works OK.

Should we have to do this? Are tables and forms not more closely related? Also the new lookup has a greater height than the rest of the fields and won't save a resize of the dimensions after clicking properties. Typical beginners muddle, sorry.

    Glenn,

Should we have to do this? YES

Yup, the wasy it's designed, not to my liking though.

    Hang in there.

RE: lookups in tables and forms

Glenn, you should not have to use a button on your form to do a table lookup.

For the field in question define a simple list or table lookup in field rules of the table. Then drop the field on your form. Depending upon how you specified the 'pop up' options in your field rule the field will automatically expand during data entry or will wait for the user to push a little triangle shaped icon to begin the lookup. In some cases you might want to pop up on mismatch. It's actually quite powerful.

However, as Ken indicates, you don't have much control over the appearance of the table lookup dialog box. There have been quite a few recent postings on this. Many have decided to build their own custom lookups using dialog forms in order to gain more control. You might check some of their examples.

        Thanks Ken (again!)
Thanks Tom. When say 'drop' the field on the form, is this some sort of drag and drop?

To answer my own question, from the drag/drop list, obviously. Only query now is that auto pop-up is set to on, but it doesn't happen.

            Glenn,

Try going to field rules for the lookup field, set the the auto pop-up condition to: Conditionally on entrance

Then set the condition to: .T.

That should always cause the pop-up to open

Thanks Tom. The pop-up is OK in table view, but won't happen in form view, even after following your suggestion.

                Tom,

Delete the field form the form and add a new one. Sometimes it doesn't work unless you place the field on the form after the field rules have been set. Not supposed to be this way but I've seen goofier things.

RE: lookups in tables and forms

I had the field type in properties set to drop-down list. I guess it was doing what it was told. Set as type-in it works fine. I appreciate all the help. What's our quota on stupid questions? (My next one's going to be about disappearing, empty and single-icon toolbars, all the show/hide stuff notwithstanding (and I haven't touched the customise function, I promise.)
