Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dissapearing Menus

I have an application that is loaded across a network. Occasionally some of the computes loose the toolbar.

Any idea what would cause this?

    John,

Some of the computers loose the tool bar; is this in view or design mode?

Quite often, while in design mode, the tool bar does take a hike and doees not come back. The only solution that I'm aware of is to close out the app and open it again.

If it's happening in view mode, I've not heard of that problem before. Perhaps a search for disappearing tool bar my yeild additional info.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

It is happening in view mode. The toolbar itself doesn't actually disappear, it is still there, but the buttons are gone (except for one half of one of the icons on the far left end, and you can't click on that).

I will continue my search for an answer, any other ideas, please let me know.

      Thanks!

try compacting the database and then refresh the shadows

If you're using ui_freeze()you might try doing without it.
If that doesn't work you might try calling the menubar
a second time when you initialize the form. If you've
got a lot of graphics on the form including large buttons
I'de be suspicious that the systems just plain overworked.

            Good luck.

                John,

If the toolbar is custom designed, any of the items in the form or a report can vanish or become corrupted. The item can vanish when the Form's item index becomes corrupted. Usually this problem can be resolved by running a Database Compact especially if you have deleted some form items. This can rebuild the item indexes for the problem form and make objects visible again.

If this still doesn't work, the form item may be corrupted. Usually the items entry is still readable, but the associated compiled binary code for it is corrupted and the item won't run properly.
Usually the solution is to make a copy of the form or report with the corruption and then delete pieces until the remaining portion of the form starts to work again. You then delete this one item from a fresh copy, patch the form and save it.

On more complicated database designs, it's wise to work with copies of forms and reports rather than to risk corruption of the only good working copy.

                Dave

                  Tom,

I'm not using ui_freeze(), but your idea of calling the toolbar again doesn't sound like a bad idea.

How would I go about doing this?

                  Thanks

                    RE: Dissapearing Menus

                    Scott,

The xbasic command to load a toolbar is

                    formmname.toolbar = "toolbar name"

If you want to reload a menu, use

                    formname.drop_down_menu = "menu name"

I have seen a case where the menu disappears when switching from a dialog back to the calling form, but I have not had a problem with toolbars.

Another consideration is that refresh shadow may not have completely transfered all the correct data. If in doubt, try copying the database .alb, .alm, .alx files from the server to the terminal manually. This will insure that the terminal has the same menus and toolbars available since they are saved in these files. Do NOT copy the .adb file. If you want the tables to be current, copy the .ddd, .ddm, .ddx files for each table from the server to the terminal. This is essentially what refresh_shadow() is supposed to do. Unfortunately, like many others, I have found refresh_shadow() to be unreliable on occasion.
