Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Text Formatting

I use a memo field (non-RTF) to hold long descriptions. Our employees spend hours per day editing these fields. The memo editor comes up full screen which makes this easier, but the font is set by default to 8 pt.

Is there a way to change the default font in a memo editor?

    Thanks, John

    RE: Text Formatting

    John,

This has been asked a number of times on the forum. Search for "memo" and you will get a number of hits on the subject. Unfortunately, there is currently no way to change the font, but I posted a workaround some time ago that uses a dialog form to simulate the poup box. Search for "disable editor menus" and you will find it. I can't claim complete credit for the idea. Someone else came up with it and I expanded it.

        RE: Text Formatting

Here's the easy way to do it:

        1. From the view menu, select Settings
        2. Select Styles tab
        3. Change the font size to 12 or whatever.
        4. Click OK.
        5. Close out A5. (You may have to reboot the machine)

        Works like a charm.

          Ken,

I tried that, but it doesn't seem to work. Which should I choose to change... forms, browse, reports, labels, letters, cards?

I can change the way it displays and works on the form, but when I click the memo editor button and get the different window, it is always in 8 font.

          Any suggestions?

          Thanks for you help,

          John

            John,

While in Design mode, click the View menu and then settings. That should make the deafult font throughout the entire app. Mus admit I've not tried it on a specific browese or report. It will handle all forms as in my test, when dropping a field on any form, the font size was the same as I set it to in Settings.

              John,

I had another look at the Settings menu. You can change the defaul fault for forms, browses, etc. Simply click on each radio button and then change the font. Alpha does it this way so we have the freedom to set separate and different default fonts and/or sizes for forms, browses, reports, letters, cards, etc.

Quite a nice deal. I selected the Browse radio button and then changed the default font and font size. Then I created a browse. Walla!

Note: The new default settings only take effect on browses, forms, etc. created AFTER the change. It has NO effect on previously created forms, browses, reports, etc. In my test browse, I set a different font and font size for each of 2 browses. Then I went to the first browse, deleted a field and then added it back in. It was the font and font size of the current default font and font size.

              make sense?

                Ken,

No offense, but I must not be explaining myself properly. I am not talking about a browse of a form, I'm talking about the memo editor. This is the window that comes up if you have a memo field in a form, and you click on the pencil icon in the top right hand corner.

It doesn't appear to be a "form" or a "browse" that you create. It is a system set window and I can't seem to find any means of setting any of its' properties.

                Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.......It's a mystery.

                Thanks again for your advice.

                  John,

I used the browse as an example. Have you opened the settings from the View menu? You can do this while in either the control panel or in design mode.

                  Here's what I did.

                  1. Added a memo field to a table.
                  2. Clicked on the VIEW menu.
                  3. Selected SETTINGS
                  4. Clicked on the STYLES tab.
                  5. Changed the font size to 14.
                  6. Selected a font at random.
                  7. Created a form and added the memo field.
                  7. I typed directly into the memo field.
                  9. I also clicked on the pencil and entered data.
                  10. Closed the memo field and viewed the form.
                  11. The data is the new default settings.

This will NOT change any previous data displayed in forms, browses, reports, letters, etc. unless you delete the field and then reselect the field.

                  It works!!

                    RE: Text Formatting

                    Hi,

I would like to echo the comments made by Jerry Brightbill, because I am using the method he demonstrated. I use a dialog form in place of the memo editor and can use whatever font I desire. Apparently, the properties of the memo editor can't be controlled in Alpha 5. Jerry Brightbill's method will allow you a lot more control over a method to allow the end user to edit the memo field. He has an attached file on one of the threads in the forum which gives an excellent example of how to do this. I think it is under "Disable memo editor". There is a transparent button over the pencil on the memo field which calls the dialog form and you have a lot more control over it. Note: the actual pencil on the memo field must be disabled, but it shows through on the form, so the end user will not notice any difference when using this method.

I can set the font size on the dialog form to whatever I wish.

                    Good luck,
                    Robin Sculthorpe

                        Robbin,

I downloaded the MemoTest.zip and found 2 forms. On both forms, when the memo field is opened, clicking the pencil has absolutely no effect. Nothing happens!

Hey everyone, I found the file and downloaded it. However, it does not have the find and replace functions. I guess what this means is......

If I want a readable font, I lose the find and replace. If I want the find and replace, I can't read the font.

Does anyone know if this has been addressed in Version Five, and when that may be released?

                          John

I'm not sure what all is being changed re: memo fields in v5 other than we will be able to utilize them in a browse and the rich text memo fields are supposed to be more stable.

Others may have more info on this.

Ok guys, Here it is again. Open the zip file and attach the table to a database. Open the memotest form and click on the "pencil" This opens a dialog form called "AccesoryDetail." On this dialog form the "pencil" does nothing. It is there because the form is using an expanded window for the memo and Alpha puts the pencil there to open the memo window. Since this form is replacing the memo window, there is no purpose to the pencil.
