Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Deleting variables in a report

    Hi Phorum,

First things first, I am still a novice, but I can read. I am trying to delete an
ask variable on a report. I found the "how to delete a variable in the help column". It is as follows (A5V4.5/build 266):

Go into design mode of the report, select V at the top to bring up the variable definition box, hilite the variable to be deleted, hold down the shift key then press down arrow once, press delete, select file at the top left corner, select
    save. Exit the report.

I have done this several times, yet when I re-enter the report in the design mode,
VOILA ... the variable is still there. Is it necessary for me to delete the report
and make a new one, or is the help column missing something, OR ... did I misinterpret the instructions?

While on this subject, will the ask variables come up when the report is run in the same order that they are entered in the variable definition box?

    Thanks in advance,
    efs

Sorry guys, I meant variable dialog box, not variable definition box.
    Humble as always,

      Ed,

I'm guessing you used the ask variable in the filter for your report. If so, have you removed it from the filter first, then gone to the variable definition box and removed it there.

If the ask is still used in the filter, I would expect Alpha to recreate the definition each time you deleted it.
      There can be only one.

        Ed,

Is there still an object or field in your report layout that is linked to the ask variable you are trying to delete?

Is the ask variable still being used in a filtering or ordering expression in your layout?

If so, I think you have to change or remove them from the layout.

          Hi Guys,

Thank you for the immediate response. When I get back from lunch I'll
check for the filter. As usual, you guys are really in there pitching for the newbies.

          Thanks again,

            Hi,

I was too excited to wait until after lunch, You are partially right,
it was still in the detail filter; however, I removed the filter and
the ask vars are still in there after removing them again. BTW, I was
sure to save the changes. The second part of this is: Will the dialog
boxes appear when the form is opened in the same order that they were
entered in the variable dialog box?

Leave it to me to create a problem,
            efs

Check any calculations that may be using he variable by the original ask. Even though you deleted if from the filter, it will keep asking until you find all occurances of the "ask".

                Ed,

I don't use ask variables much, but they can be very convenient. You should check all the calc fields, and all aspects of the report layout. (Properties, objects, and events). You've got to clear out all occurrences of the ask variable or I fear it will keep coming back.

As for your second question, I don't know the answer. Should be easy to test. Why don't you?

RE: Deleting variables in a report

                  Hi Tom,

You are right on the money again, I was still using them in the report
header. The reason I asked if the ask vars would appear in the same
order is because before I made the new header, they were appearing in
the proper order, after I made the concatenated calc field for the
header, they were asked in the 3,2 & 1 order (backwards). Seems funny to me but it does do the job.

Your time is valuable to me,
