Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Form's calculated field isn't totaling properly

    I upgraded to version 4.5 from version 3. I'm using a database created in v 3. I added this calculated field (BID_ITEM->Ext_Total,GRP->BIDS) where BID_ITEM is the child database to BID.
    My plan is to total the Ext_total field like you might total the column of invoice lines.
    It's not totaling them. I have the same number no matter what record I'm in until I go to "design" form and then go back to form view. Whatever record is displayed is then recalculated properly. I moved to another record and the past record's number is still displayed. I press design and then form view again, and it recalcs the stuff in that record correctly again.
    What's UP?
    Did I make a mistake in upgrading? Do I need to convert my forms and databases in some way?
    Thanks

    Sounds like the calculated field as displayed on the form is not being automatically refreshed when you change records.

    Right click on the background of the form, select actions, choose the onfetch event, hilight the "Action Script" in the big box bottom left, from the code menu at the top select "Convert to xbasic", type in the:

    name of your calculated field.refresh()

    like

    myvar.refresh()

    close the code editor, save, and try it out.
    There can be only one.

      That worked. Thanks so much.
      Why did it do that? Is it because it's an old form?
      I won't have to do that for any new forms from here on out will I?

        One of life's little mysteries and part of living with windows. Sometimes the form's displayed variables and calculated fields change with the background data and sometimes they don't. Objectname.refresh() is included in the method set for a reason and I guess that's the reason.

        Glad it helped.

          Brad,

          Stan's solution works, but here's something to be aware of:

          Cal Locklin and I did extensive testing using the format you used for the calc field. It turns out that it is NOT always reliable. This format really belongs in reports, and we're not sure why it is generated when you place a calc field on a form.

          A more reliable way (and one that doesn't require refreshing the form) is to use DBSUM:

          CALC_FIELD=DBSUM("TABLE_NAME.DBF","INDEX_NAME",VALUE TO MATCH, "FIELD_NAME")

          In this example, TABLE_NAME would be BID_ITEM, INDEX_NAME and FIELD_NAME come from BID_ITEM, and VALUE TO MATCH is the name of a field in the parent whose value matches a group of values in the child. Note that all parameters EXCEPT the VALUE TO MATCH are in quotes.
