Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Others may provide a more detailed overview of this A5. I will tell you that it is the first database environtment designed with the novice in mind. There are numerous samples and templetes provided with the software. In addition, there are many genies to help you build reports, import and export data, update data in files, post data to files, etc.

The documentation provides direct and easy to follow instructions and guidelines. Third part books by Dr. Peter Wayne(purchased separately) provide even more insight into the use of A5.

Plus the best caveat of all is this board. All users, novice, expert, and Alpha's partners and staff, respond to help you resolve any all questions that you may encounter.

I think you will be hard pressed to find any product that provides this type of environment.

    I hope this helps.

        RE: New to Alpha

        Hung,

You might look for an Alpha User's Group in your area.

In Minnesota we are having a Alpha User's Group meeting on February 23 in Minneapolis, Mn. Mr. Jim Chapman is giving an XBasic Workshop and ALL are welcome.

        You would be most welcome.

I tell you, I have tried just about all the other database products out there, and if you are interested in the satisfaction that comes from visualizing, creating and using the fruits of your own labors, ALPHA 5 is the way to go. Never, and I mean never have I used a database product that allows you to so easily create your vision.

I would suggest that this phorum be a bookmark in your web browser. I have learned so much from all the smart people that frequent this board. There are also other web sites that can assist you.

I know it is hard to believe, but the user's manual along with the XBasic user's guide also help bunches.

          Welcome to the family.

            Wow thanks a lot guys

i will be to do so, the main reason i want to get into this is i ran across Microsoft Access, SQL, Progress Database and some dos database that i am not sure what the heck it is, and heard of Oracle.

but none does really what i want, some has very confusing interface, my wife is trying to get a customized db to work on her invoicing system, the software we bought over a grand in Canadian dollar with all those printers and bar code scanner, for over $5000 and yet, some function are so limited and the interface is old dos, and has all kinds of glitches with win2k.

looks like this is the DB i want to pick up and learn, i heard there is a revised version of Alpha book version released, i will get and learn it, and with the help on this board, i am sure i will do OK

            thanks
