Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Records not summarizing

I have been using A5 all versions on and off for some time. Recently I was trying to summarize some records, Vendor Name and amount. Could'nt be easier. I've indexed on Vendor Name. Amount is numeric + 2 decimal places. When I summarize I don't get the choice of using Sum for the amount field only First, Last, min, max. Help.

    Arthur,

Are you using the Summarize Genie? I believe there's a problem with the Genie, it may not give you all the options when summarizing on a numeric field.

What I do occasionally is use the genie to start the process, then modify the results in the Summarize card.

Thanks for that info. I did try that but found the same problem i.e. Sum was not available. Its as if it thinks its not a numeric field. I also ran a Compact and tried again. The only other thing I've done is that the database is an Excel spreadsheet saved as Dbf and added to an A5 app.

Did you verify, by looking at the table structure, that Alpha built the imported .dbf with a numeric type for this field. I've seen numbers imported as characters if the formatting in Excel wasn't "just right".

Rather than re-importing, if this is the case, just add another field to the .dbf, make it calculated expression val(otherfieldname), reevaluate field rules, and you should be able to summarize.
        There can be only one.

The field is showing as numeric in A5. I've also done as you say and created a calculated field, re-evaluated the fields rules etc. I still have the same problem in that the new calculated field is not allowed to be summarized.

            RE: Records not summarizing

Hi again. I've just resolved the problem. I had named my databases 2000 and 2001 for the years I had data on. When I renamed them to YR2001 and tried to summarize then I could see the Sum function available. I didn't realise that the name of the database could cause problems.

            Many thanks for your help.

              RE: Records not summarizing

I had a similar problem with a dues application for a union. My goal
was to subtract all data from the previous year and save it for future
perusal. I, along with help from our experts in the phorum here
constructed a script that would do just that and named the saved table
for the year that was subtracted. I had all kinds of trouble with it
until Tom Cone alerted me to the fact that A5 does not like tables
whose name begins with a numeral, hence I concatenated a Y as a prefix
              and all problems went away.

In the documentation you will find that table names may not begin with a number. Violating this injunction leads to various subtle anomalies.
