Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    AlphaFive: Xbasic for Everyone

I recently purchased Dr. Peter Wayne's book, AlphaFive: Xbasic for Everyone. While reading it I keep coming across the letter "C" in sentances where it does not any make sense.

    To site just two examples:
    Chapter 1, Database Review
On Page 1 that describes the types of fields it has:
    Character C
    Numeric C
    Logical C
    Memo C
    Date C
    as so on.

    Chapter 9, Flow Control
On Page 37 where it describes IF THEN ELSE END IF it is printed as IF THENC ELSE C END IF.

As I read through the manual the letter must be in there at least 100 times maybe more. Is this a typo or does it have a meaning that is required for learning Xbasic?

Was the manual proof read before it was published? If these are typos, is a corrected edition being sent to all those who purchased this edition?

Thank you for any comments or explanations.

I also noticed this but since I had the previous version it was apparent to me that this was probably some "nonprinting" character which was misinterpreted by the page layout program used to produce the book.

      Bill,

Thank you for your prompt reply. Being a real Xbasic novice, I was beginning to think that this was really out of reach for me...it may still be.

The AlphaFive V4.5 software seems like an excellent programbut for people like me with ZERO programming experience the documentation is really lacking and confusing. The typos only add to the frustration of learning Xbasic.

Again, I genuinely appreciate your reply.

Bernard, do you know if the author knows about this?

          Tom,

I do not know if the author is aware of the typos. I just thought that if the Xbasic manual is widely sold that more than a few would have notified Dr. Wayne before me and a corrected edition would be sent out to recent customers. I just purchased the software and manuals in December of 2001 and just discovered this forum a few weeks ago and thought that I would ask the question.

Thank you for raising the question in your reply. Sometimes I overlook the obvious. Will email Dr. Wayne tonight.

            Bernard,

            >>The AlphaFive V4.5 software seems like an excellent program

            It really is.

            >>but for people like me with ZERO programming experience the documentation is really lacking and confusing.

The company is aware of this issue. I think we can hope that version 5 will be improved in this area.

            >>The typos only add to the frustration of learning Xbasic.

You can read over them now that you know they are typos.

Like you I started as a non programmer. I would say that I now have a fair degree of mastery. I have a couple of suggestions:

            -Regarding Dr. Wayne's Xbasic book
Read it once over fast. Then go back to the beginning and study it.

-Build yourself a small inessential application just for didactic purposes. This is much less frustrating than trying to start out with something important. Then throw away your test piece or keep it to look at later to see how far you will have progressed.

By the way, you should also take a look at Dr. Wayne's other book, Learning Alpha Five which is at a more elementary level. Finally, check out learn alpha.com.

Courage. Everyone begins as a beginner.

You have just had the best advice from William, I have been useing Alpha for many years and it did take me some time to get into it, but the pleasure you get from each step after you have learnt something new is just like a baby taking it's first steps and before you know it you will be running with the best of them. Be positive, be bold and you will do it.
