Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    disappearing form

    Evening

    I am trying to open a form based on the same set as an already open form. The open form is for using the 'find by form' to look up a certain invoice. I made a button with the genie to open the new form that matches the invoice_number of the already open form.

    It put in this code:

    DIM layout_ptr as P
    layout_ptr = :Form.load("Invoicefind")
    layout_ptr:tables:INVOICE_HEADER.filter_expression="invoice_number = '" + invoice_number.TEXT + "'"
    layout_ptr:tables:INVOICE_HEADER.order_expression=""
    layout_ptr:tables:INVOICE_HEADER.query()
    layout_ptr.show()
    layout_ptr.activate()

    This will work fine once. On pushing the button again, a white window flashes on screen then back to the original calling form. And so on.
    When I go check sessions through xbasic explorer, there are as many forms showing open as wouldn't open on screen.

    The code is probably fine.
    Is there a problem with the form I am trying to open? I don't have anything more in the called form events than a few hide this and show that stuff. Should I rebuild the form? It was copied and pasted with the control panel, and then modified. It would take a long time to build from scratch.
    Otherwise, does anyone have an easy solution?

    Thanks
    Duane

    RE: disappearing form

    Hi Duane
    I haven't tried this as I am sitting at home, but if I had to guess (which I do alot) I wouldn't run a query to find the record for the new form. When the button is pushed, I would pass the current invoice number to a variable, and the new form would use a filter based on that variable to display the record. Does the new form get closed at some point? Using this method they would be locked into 1 record with no navigation.

    I see it as the user finding the invoice using the first form, pressing the button to get the record, making changes, closing the second form before trying to look up another invoice.

    Just a suggestion. And may be way off base.

      RE: disappearing form

      Opening the same form more than once seems to open another session.

      Have you looked at the "Window" menu in the Alpha menubar. You may well have multiple copies of the form open, just stacked on top of one another. If you open the first and don't move it, then the second will open in the same screen area as the first.
      There can be only one.

        Thanks
        I'll try the var thing.
        I figured the query was ok to use cause that's the way the genie did it!

          Do a search on "form as dialog" with the quotes. I think it will lead you to what you want to do.

            Stan

            The form was't really opening for use each time,it would disappear. Plus I would close it if it did open after viewing that the right invoice# had opened.
            The windows menu drop down would only have the control panel and the calling form listed, even though the xbasic window said there were up to 9 sessions open.
            But thanks for checking.

              The variable method works just fine.
              Thanks for the direction.
