Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 newbie has SLOW update

I'm migrating from MS Access 97 to Alpha Five V4.5
I'm trying to run a simple update operation on a single text field in a table with about 8500 records. I can run the same query using Access from the same machine, over the same network, and using the same file in about 20 seconds. In A5 it is taking 10 to 15 minutes! I must be doing something wrong. Surely this thing doesn't always run 40X slower than Access ?!?!
    Thanks in Advance
    Jeff

RE: A5 newbie has SLOW update

    Hi Jeff,

Welcome from Access 97. I'm a almost former A97 user as well.(still got it at work but not for long)

This has to do with network optimization. Do a search on the board for network optimize and you'll probably find your answer.

Also, when in the control panel, look under File and you'll see a choice of Optimize. Once you get this working, speed will increase dramatically.

      Jeff,

And, just thought of this, in addition to optimizing, how about your indices? Does Alpha have to build and index each time this is done? If you haven't built an index for this operation, now is the time to do it.

Network wasn't a problem. I hadn't set up the index for that table. Now it zips right trough.
        Thanks,
        Jeff

          Hello Jeff,

Tell us more. Are you saying that in the defined update operation you had set an order of records that wasn't supported by an index? That would explain some extra time for the query, but 15 min. for 8500 records is way to long for just a simple ordering. What else can you tell us.

          Thanks,
          Jim

RE: A5 newbie has SLOW update

I imported this table from a text file and made a new update operation that basically updated a field to just the 2 leftmost characters of that field i.e. udated FIELDX to left(alltrim(FIELDX),2).
When I went back and looked at the index definitions there was one set up on the first field (don't know where it came from) that only contained a 1,2,3, or 4 for each of the 8500 records. I deleted that one and created one on the AreaCode and Number fields. It took less than 30 seconds to execute after that.
