Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Bitmap Field Problem..

I have a bitmap problem that has been happening for some time now... I have a bitmap field placed on a form, but as soon as you click on the field to import an image, I immediately get an illegal protection fault error and the program locks up. Happens with both Win98 and Win2k. I seem to be able to make it work on a very simple form for one or two times, but then the problem appears and I cannot make it work no matter what I try to do. It can't have anything to do with the type of image I'm trying to import since I never get that far. Any suggestions?

    Bobby,

Try this: Can you go to the folder where the image is stored and copy it and then paste it into the folder where your application is stored. That's what I do since if you copy the app to a CD or distribute it, you'll loose the path.

Ken, thanks for that, but I've already tried it to no avail!

Have you tried a "database compact" to see if that clears anything lurking in the dbf which could be causing the problem?

Have you tried to create a new form with that field on it to see if that works?

        Regards

Haven't tried packing the database, but it only has a few records in it. I can create a new form with only the bitmap field on it, and it will work once or twice, but then it hangs up!!

            Bobby,

            Are you saying:

            1. You were unable to copy the bitmap file or,
            2. You did copy the bitmap file, pasted it to the folder containing your database and it still hangs up even when loading from the database folder?

If it's behind door #2, perhaps the problem is the bitmap itself.

            Just for grins, try this:

            3. Try loading other bitmaps
            4. Try copy / paste other bitmaps to the database folder.

Let us know how that works.

              RE: Bitmap Field Problem..

Ken was talking about running a "Database Compact" from the control panel by clicking "File" / "Database Compact" - not a Pack operation on the table.

Here are some paraphrased comments from the Help files:

Database Compact performs maintenance on the Data Dictionaries making them more compact and efficient. As layouts and layout objects are added and removed, the data dictionary size will increase. Perform maintenance to reduce the size of the data dictionaries. The Database compact command performs maintenance on all dictionaries in the database.

Although not documented, we've also discovered that this can sometimes eliminate strange problems that crop up. This is always a good thing to do whenever you have troubles and/or have been doing any significant editing.

Thanks for clearing that up Ken. I tried that it had no effect. Any more ideas?

                  RE: Bitmap Field Problem..

I am not able to do anything at all with any type of bitmap image at all. As soon as I click on the image field, the program locks up. I'm having that problem with several different applications located on different machines. Any more suggestions? Compacting the database didn't help either.....

                    RE: Bitmap Field Problem..

Alpha only accepts certain types of bitmaps. This issue has been discussed extensively before. You could try importing the bimap into MS Paint and then saving it. That might work.

Thanks for the reply, Peter, but the type of bitmap cannot be the issue. The system crashes the very second I click on the field and I never have a chance to point to a bitmap image of any type.....

                        Bobby,

What field are you talking about? The bitmap file itself or the Alpha drop down box for choosing the path to the bitmap?

                          Bobby,

What version of alpha are you using?

Can you give us a rundown of your computer ( cpu, speed, memory, etc. ?

                          Have you tried reinstalling alpha?

Have you or anybody else tinkered with the settings in Alpha?

Do you have a special install of Windows ( added extra or left out components )?

I use bitmaps in all versions of windows without issue.

                          Dave

I'm having the problem on pc's running win98 and several running win2000; none have any special installations. They vary from 300mz to 1.5gig processors. I've reinstalled Alpha Five ver 4.0 several times. I haven't changed any of the default A5 settings.....
