Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    networking speed

    Hi all,

My company purchased brand new Gateway computers with Win98SE. The computers came with the network cards installed so I didn't have to configure anything.

We use Alpha5 v4.5 on the peer-to-peer network with one computer used as a dedicated server. But when I moved everything to the Gateway computers, the Alpha5 application slowed to a crawl.

So I moved the data to one of our previous computers, and the speed was fine. So I'm guessing that there's some configuration of the network that I need to do on the new Gateways.

Is there anything I should look for to make sure the network is optimized for use with Alpha5?

    Thanks,

    Rick

    RE: networking speed

    Rick,

I am sure you will get better advice, but You may have a bad or weak new card in that Gateway. Gateway buys by price like most computer companies. Please check that first. You may even slip one of your old (known Good) cards into it. I ONLY use 3com cards in the computers I sell and I remove any cards I find in other computers and replace with 3com when doing a network for others.

Now I have run into a situation with 98SE where tcp/ip got busy with the internet and it was necessary to load the netbeui protocol onto the computer also. I am sitting at that computer now.

If the Gateway is properly set up and working right, it should be as fast as any other. Did you try placing your Data on a different Gateway?

      Dave,

Thanks for the reply. I have tried the data on one of the other new Gateways, and had the same problem. I'll check for the netbeui.

      Thanks,

      Rick

        Hi Rick!

A quick check of the gateway web site showed that they are currently bundling Norton AntiVirus 2002 with their PCs.

I recall reading posts (in a couple of other newsgroups) regarding Norton Antivirus causing a severe slowdown in the operation of database programs. I've read recommendations that Norton by default is configured to check all files for viruses - and for database programs that includes forms, reports, etc.

One solution that was mentioned was to reconfigure Norton AV to check only programs and macro files.

Another recommendation that I read debated back and forth was to turm off SmartScan in Norton AV, which was new in NAV 2001. My understanding is "SmartScan" is an attempt to discover viruses not in the definition file by looking at every file that is opened or changed and trying to determine if anything looks suspicious. Thus significantly increasing the file open and manipulation time.

Many have found that they could accomplish a performance increase by turning off an option in Norton called "SmartScan technology".

Since I don't use Norton AV, I can't give you any firsthand reports, but you could also do a Google newsgroup search for further info.

        O.J.

          OJ,

I took your advice, and totally disabled the Norton Anti-Virus completely for testing purposes. Same slowness. So I think I can rule out the anti-virus issue. I also disabled it on the user computer to see if that had an effect, but it didn't.

I'm gonna check to see if has the netbeui installed next.

          Thanks,

          Rick

            Rick,

Have you remembered to network optimize the database itself?

i.e. are opening Alpha Five on the local work station and loading the database from the server? or, have you optimized the database to create a shadow copy which is being opened locally?

I ask because this is something you would probably not do often, and if it's been a while since it occurred perhaps you simply forgot about it.
