Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Having a Form look like Invoice!!

    Hello:
I need help in final design of my form, and I just have ran into the wall! I have Custdb,Invhdrdb, Seviceitemdb, and a Vin_numbdb,tables. I have my set as Invhdrdb, as the parent and all others as child links to Invhdrdb. with a One to One relationship. When I develope my form all I can do is get one entry per Invoice in the Service perfomed field. I'm in the glass repair business and work on cars windshields. I also could use some helpful input on a good way to relate VIN numbers into the form so that if I work on the same vehicle again in the future I don't have to reinput year, make, model and vin again! Thank you in advance for your help.

PS I developed a flat file years ago with Alpha3 and have about 5 years of Invoices recorded in that file. I made a huge mistake in that file and did not designate Cust#s. Is there any way to inport that into the new revised table and Version 4.5?

    Lonnie,

To allow multiple services per invoice Invhdrdb must be linked one-to-many to Seviceitemdb. This will solve your immediate problem.

You may consider whether you need a second set with Custdb linked one-to-many to Invhdrdb. A screen based on this set will allow you to create a form showing all invoices linked to a given customer.

I suggest you make sure you have your data structures perfected before getting into the task of converting, updating and importing your old data.

      Lonnie,

I have pretty much written what you want and will send it to you in the next few days. Use it to get ideas for your own.

I do a lot in Automotive.

Your a4 database can be modified to include a customer number, and since it is flat file, you should be able to copy all to a5 for further parsing.

You can create a lookup on the same database as you are working in to get the name and so forth.

Thanks Bill I haven't had time to redo the set relationship but that is exactly where I've goofed on the design.

David that sounds great to have a good model to look at. I'm looking forward to receiving your pattern.
          Thank You!

            Lonnie,

This is an unfinished copy of what I gave the customer. It could be a good while before I get the original finished product. I believe this will give you the Idea.

I do not print forms - they are for viewing. I make reports for that.

            Good Luck

Thanks Dave for you pattern table!

Got new problems, how do I write an expression in the exp builder to get qty times price equals amount? And then I want to have a calculated field on my form for the Invoice total, which will be the sum of all the "amount"colums.

Where can a person find GOOD documentation on expressions?
I've bought the books from Alpha 5 and am still lost!

                  Lonnie:

For Quatity * Price = Amount. I would have that in the field rules for a field in the item browse.

With that you can then, on the form drag a calculated field and summarize all of the 'amounts' for that viewed record. Select 'Total' and then advanced and then 'Group'. That will get you the total of the line item 'amounts'.

Play with it - I did and it is easy once you understand.

Thanks Ken: I got that calculated field to work, I guess i was just thinking it had to read a lot more than Qty*Price.

Now all I need now is to do a calculated field on the form at bottom which will now give me the Sum of all the above fields of qty*price = Amount! I would like the sum of the amount columns to be the Invoice total.

                      Lonnie,

The invoice forms I sent you had all that already done

Look at the bottom of the form

An additional issue in creating a calculated field is round off error. Just using Quantity * Price may result in a slight error which will show up in subsequent calculations or expressions that compare calculated values to entered vlaues. Since you are working with currency, use

                        round(Quantity * price,2) = amount

                        This will keep everything consistent

Ok Jerry, and all thank you for your input, I've done those commands and now all I get when entering my items is the first line, if I try to ad a second line it starts a new record. I have 1 to Many, shouldn't I get many inputs in the Line Items on the form? Don't know where to go from here!!

                              Lonnie,

Sounds to me as if your link isn't working properly. The data in the linking field isn't transfering to the child table. Thus, there is no relationship between the child and the parent and you WILL get the results you're experiencing. From your earlier statement (above), get your set in order first. W/o a good foundation, everything else will DRIVE YOU NUTS!
