Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How can I fax and wait for a fax to print or view?

I need to be able to send a formatted text sequence and then wait on a response ( usually within a minute ) to format, save and view/print.

    Any Ideas??

Are you wanting to do this from A5? If so, I believe that feature should be available in v5. I don't think it's possible at this time, even with xbasic.

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

      Dave,

Assuming other processes will be used to receive the return fax, you can force Alpha Five to 'wait' using the sleep() function. It will pause the execution of a script for a specified number of seconds.

If the 'other process' can write a flag to disk, your Alpha Five script could go to sleep, wake up, look for the flag, go back to sleep if not present, or continue if found.

There are also functions available in Alpha Five to schedule scripts to run at specified times.

        Ken,

The wish is to do it all from and within A5.

I need to be able to pull credit bureaus from within the program. This entails information collection, making a package of that information, dialing a specified number(s), sending the package, waiting while the package is processed, recieving the answer package, formatting the information and printing/viewing the resulting report.

I do not believe it is possible in v4.5, but am hoping it is in v5

Any Lending or major sales organization that extends credit or brokers credit needs to be able to pull credit histories. I can see a definite use for this ability.

Most automotive lenders and Banks now go by the Beacon score or equivalent. A Merchant needs to know this score to be able to send the application for credit to the proper lending institution.

        Thanks
        Dave

          Dave,

This can be done from Alpha 5 (pretty much any version). Heck, it can be done with Alpha 4. The biggest issue is what to do with a fax when you get it back? It's just a graphic file.

Perhaps there is a way to send an e-mail or submit a web page request and get an e-mail response that would allow better and automatic data processing methods.

            Ira,

I am over my head a bit here, the return may be a data stream ( not sure ).

I have seen the process in action and am real sure other people ( also in other languages ) are formatting the response before print or view. There is no underlying fax program. The data sent may also be a stream. the info sent is name(s), address, ss#, dob, etc.

            You got me thinking now.

            thanks
            Dave

It sounds like you need to interface with hyperterminal or similar terminal software.

I'd suggest trying to get some data on the exact protocols used, data structure expected and returned, etc...

I know you can use DDE to send/recieve data to/from other programs, so that should be doable... I don't think A5 can handle the terminal communications by itself, but it could be made pretty transparent to the user.
